"Turkish delights Apr 29 2005

THERE we were, right in the heart of Istanbul's old town, Sultanahmet, congratulating ourselves on booking a hotel a stone's throw from the city's main attractions.
At 5am the following morning, however, we were less than impressed. There is, as it turns out, a downside to basing yourself a short walk from one of the world's most important mosques: the dawn call to prayer.
We were jolted from sleep by haunting - and extremely loud - Arabic verses blaring from the Blue Mosque's enormous speakers across the still city streets."
