TR_ISTA - 28.01.2014 12:02:59

“Ending the military tutelage” has been named as the top success of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) during its 11-year rule.
People from a wide political range, including socialists and liberals, voted in favor of a 2010 referendum that paved the way to put the architects of the Sept. 12, 1980 military coup on trial. In addition, the architects of the Feb. 28, 1997 coup -- which has been dubbed a “postmodern coup” because no murders occurred -- were brought to court along with those who attempted to oust the government through coup plots under the names “Ergenekon” and “Balyoz (Sledgehammer).”

EU 'worried' by emerging markets
Tue, 28 Jan 2014 8:40 AM

Eurozone countries are "worried" by the problems hitting emerging economies but do not believe there is a risk of contagion, senior officials said on Monday.

Jeroen Dijsselbloem, the head of the Eurogroup which gathers the finance ministers of countries that use the single currency, insisted that the euro's fragile recovery was not threatened.

The worries over markets such as Argentina, Turkey and Russia come as the eurozone is emerging from the worst of its debt crisis.

"Of course we are worried about this from the perspective of the emerging countries," Dijsselbloem told a press conference after a meeting of the group in Brussels.

The Kurds' Dangerous Game in Turkey

The Kurds' Dangerous Game in Turkey
By Nuray Mert

Posted 2014-01-27 01:56 GMT

Under different circumstances, it would be a sign of great hope to witness an alliance between the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the Kurdish political movement. Since the Kurdish issue has always been an important aspect of democratization, any possibility of reconciliation with the government would promise a great chance for the democratization of Turkey's politics. Alas, nowadays, the tacit alliance between the Kurdistan Workers' Party's (PKK) jailed leader, Abdullah Öcalan, and the government presents more of a risk of further complicating the present political crisis than anything else.

27 January 2014 - 9:14am

Yesterday, in his interview to CNBC at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Irakli Garibashvili, Georgian Prime Minister, commented on the events in Ukraine. He related the Euromaidan with the political pressure of Russia and emphasized that Georgia is expecting a provocation from Russia. Pavel Zarifullin, Director of the Lev Gumilev Center, told Vestnik Kavkaza about the European aspirations of Georgia, Armenia and Turkey.

What is the European view on efforts by the new Georgian government to meet democratic standards of the European Union?

The view has been being formed for decades. It didn’t come from nowhere; Georgia is perceived as a freedom-loving, fair state which resists the mammoth from the north, a David against the awful Russian Goliath. Of course, it is idealized in Europeans’ eyes that everything is wonderful there, that the people have accepted true values of freedom and democracy and finally will be an example for all nations of Asia in building a state without corruption and totalitarianism. The views on Georgia are very idealistic.

Turkey under pressure over jihadists on border

It's unclear how enthusiastic the government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan is over the Geneva II talks on Syria, given that these talks effectively legitimize the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, while Ankara continues to insist that this regime has lost all legitimacy. Both Erdogan and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu are saying that they support these talks, of course, and expressing hope that it bears results.

Today, you just have to whip out your smart phone or a tablet, punch in some letters and numbers and you’ll know where you are immediately. You couldn’t do that in the Ottoman Empire of the Middle Ages, however. Paper was extremely expensive and knowledge was in scant supply. Navigation had to be carried out using observations of the sun / moon and stars and such instruments like the astrolabe, which weren’t so accurate.

AKP winning perception war - Al-Monitor: the Pulse of the Middle East

AKP winning perception war

On Dec. 17, Turkey woke up to a major graft probe. Since then, Al-Monitor’s Turkey Pulse has been busy reporting on the mindboggling sequence of events. The probe, which many predicted to be the end of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), has become a war of perception. If you google "graft," "bribery" or "corruption" in Turkish, you will see the focus has already shifted to a concept so far unheard of in Turkish politics (the “parallel state”), reassigning public prosecutors and police officers to different posts, condemning all sorts of “disinformation” and changing laws governing the structure of the judiciary.

Global Economy Turmoil: Turkey Rattles Nervous Markets - by Richard Barley

Turkey bears watching closely. The solution to the continuing selloff in the Turkish lira—which Friday hit a fresh record low of 2.33 to the dollar—seems clear: the Central Bank of Turkey needs to raise interest rates.

But political turmoil means it is unwilling to do so;its interventions in support of the lira are inadequate.

In the meantime this could cause larger problems. Turkish companies have large foreign-debt exposures, and the lira's slide could cause balance-sheet strains.

That suggests that the central bank will ultimately have to hike rates to avoid a bigger crisis. But the situation could get much more uncomfortable before that happens.
