Bridging the Turkey-EU Divide
Part 1

By Edward L. Winkfield and Samuel C. Baxter

The many differences between the European Union and Turkey will soon be overridden by one motivating factor.
SBy all accounts, it should not work. Turkey—a 99.8 percent Muslim nation—has a running bid to join the European Union. Everything seems to be against these two entities working closely together.

History: The Ottoman Turks overran the Roman Empire’s eastern capital of Constantinople in 1453.

An Obama administration official confirmed the Israeli airstrike overnight, but provided no details. Another security official said the attack occurred late Wednesday in the Syrian port city of Latakia and that the target was Russian-made SA-125 missiles.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the attack. There was no immediate confirmation from Syria.

Print and social media boomed with news on Oct. 25 that Turkish Interior Ministry sought the official opinion of the Directorate of Religious Affairs (DRA) on whether yoga is caiz (not explicitly forbidden by Islam). News reports suggested that the cause of the inquiry was the Interior Ministry’s desire to provide yoga classes for the overstressed police force. The DRA replied as long as yoga was practiced as a sport activity it was permissible, but if it has a “religious mission” it could be objectionable.

By: Yavuz Baydar for Al-Monitor Turkey Pulse Posted on October 28.

In a recent article, "Turkey's Lost Illusions," adviser and professor Dominique Moisi wrote that Turkey is now more in search of itself than it is of Europe. According to him, the end of the Soviet-era was a wake-up call for Turkey to revive a long-lost dream of (re)shaping its neighborhood under the banner of neo-Ottomanism. The endeavor, recently encapsulated in the foreign policy slogan of "zero problems with neighbors" turns out to have been an unsuccesful exercise based on costly trial and error.

Remembering Atatürk: Turkey’s Founding Father Appeared on TIME’s 4th Issue
By Ishaan Tharoor @ishaantharoorOct. 29, 2013

Today marks the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Turkish republic, which emerged out of the ruins of the Ottoman Empire as a sovereign, independent nation thanks in large part to the leadership of one man: Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. Nine decades ago, too, a new American newsweekly had started shaking up New York’s media scene. TIME’s fourth-ever issue placed “Mustapha Kemal Pasha” — he had yet to win his sobriquet “Ataturk,” or “father of the Turks” — on its March 24 cover, hailing him as the “Emancipator of Turkey” who had “lifted the people out of the slough of servile submission to alien authority, brought them to a realization of their inherent qualities and to an independence of thought and action.”

Turkish officials said in September that Turkey is likely to choose the FD-2000 missile defense system from the China Precision Machinery Import-Export Corporation (CPMIEC), which is under US sanctions for violations of the Iran, North Korea and Syria Nonproliferation Act. NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has also voiced concern about Turkey buying a system that is not compatible with those of other members. The technical rationale behind Ankara's choice is that the Chinese company will be more generous than Western ones in sharing technology with Turkey.

Istanbul is a delight for the senses
Monday 28 Oct 2013 6:00 am

Occupying a deep, natural harbour on the Bosphorus Strait, which divides the Mediterranean from the Black Sea, it’s easy to see why Istanbul was at the centre of the world’s greatest empires. The relevance of this for the modern visitor is that the city is a hotchpotch of architecture, religion and – importantly – areas. Most of the major tourist sites are in the Old City of Sultanahmet, including the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and the Blue Mosque. This area is buzzing by day and sleepier at night, when the action moves to Beyoglu, a cool district with shops, eateries and a thriving rooftop bar scene. For up-and-coming edge, try Cihangir or Karakoy – neighbourhoods of artisan street cafés, crumbling buildings and old men selling baklava to hip twenty-somethings. Luxury nightclubs cluster along the Bosphorus – Reina, Supperclub and Sortie all attract clients in yachts – and if this all gets too much, escape to The Princes Islands. The car-free archipelago is 45 minutes away by ferry and has relaxed beach clubs and a back-to-nature appeal.

Turkey: Made in China? US warns Turkey its missile deal with Beijing may be incompatible with NATO

Washington is talking to Ankara over a $3.4 billion Turkish-Chinese deal, in which the two countries agreed to co-produce a long-range air and missile defense system. The US claims the outcome may not be compatible with the existing NATO defense network.

In a surprise move for its NATO allies, Turkey announced in September it was going to award a new missile defense contract to China Precision Machinery Import and Export Corp (CPMIEC).

The Chinese defense firm, which has been sanctioned by the US for alleged violations of the Iran, North Korea and Syria Non-proliferation Act, has been chosen to co-produce the FD-2000 system with Turkish specialists. CPMIEC claims the system not only beats in price, but also comes up to the quality of its rivals – the Russian S-300, the French-Italian Eurosam SAMP/T, and the American Patriots.

Now the US has started “expert discussions” with Turkey regarding the defense tender, according to US Ambassador Francis Ricciardone quoted by Reuters.

“We are very concerned about the prospective deal with the sanctioned Chinese firm. Yes this is a commercial decision, it is Turkey’s sovereign right, but we are concerned about what it means for allied air defense,” Ricciardone told reporters on Thursday.

Saudi Arabia: Riyadh-U.S. split over Iran, Syria deepens - but in the long-run could be benificial for US

Saudi Arabia’s intelligence chief has said the kingdom will make a “major shift” in relations with the United States in protest at its perceived inaction over the Syria war and its overtures to Iran, a source close to Saudi policy said Tuesday.

Prince Bandar bin Sultan told European diplomats that Washington had failed to act effectively on the Syrian crisis and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, was growing closer to Tehran, and had failed to back Saudi support for Bahrain when it crushed an anti-government revolt in 2011, the source said.

It was not immediately clear if Prince Bandar’s reported statements had the full backing of King Abdullah.
“The shift away from the U.S. is a major one,” the source close to Saudi policy said. “Saudi doesn’t want to find itself any longer in a situation where it is dependent.”

The United States and Saudi Arabia have been allies since the kingdom was declared in 1932, giving Riyadh a powerful military protector and Washington secure oil supplies.

Note EU-Digest: Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States are among the most undemocratic States in the Middle East and this move by the US might eventually provide them with more credibility around the world in the long-run.

Turkey: A House Divided

by Robert Ellis
October 21, 2013 at 3:00 am

The EU Commission's progress report deals with a polarized society and a government that takes repressive measures against citizens who assert their democratic rights.

There is no doubt that the Gezi Park demonstrations in May and June, which spread to most of Turkey, represent a seismic change in Turkish society and have opened up fault lines which earlier may not have been apparent. What began as a demonstration against the "development" of a small park in the center of Istanbul ended as a widespread protest against the AKP government -- and particularly Prime Minister Erdoğan's authoritarian rule.

Since David Ignatius of The Washington Post broke the story on Oct. 16 that Turkey revealed to Iran the identities of as many as 10 Iranians working for the Israeli intelligence service, Mossad, there seems no doubt on the Turkish side that Ignatius is being used against Turkey by Israel or pro-Israel US government officials to establish a conspiracy to degrade its credibility and cut short its rising star as a pivotal player influencing regional dynamics.

Can Turkey's successful economic model be replicated?

Published October 20th, 2013 - 09:59 GMT via SyndiGate.info

I visited Turkey during Eid holidays and indeed I was astonished with the quantum leaps of economic growth and public service quality improvement the country had witnessed in the last few decades. As a matter of fact, at least in Istanbul that I saw, I think the improvement in the last decades in the living quality, unemployment records, urban and economic growth far exceeded several major European cities.
