‘We will not give up’: How a Turkish forest became the site of fierce coal mine resistance
By Lottie Limb with Reuters • Updated: 28/07/2023 - 16:42
With the world’s eyes on Rhodes, campaigners point out the irony of trees being felled for coal across the Mediterranean Sea in Türkiye.
Turkish villagers have been sprayed with tear gas while attempting to protect the Akbelen Forest from being cleared for coal this week, campaigners say.
For two years, locals from the Muğla region have kept a constant watch over 780 acres of woodland where Turkish company YK Energy is seeking to expand its coal mine.

Despite EU-Turkey Rapprochement, Cypriot Reunification Remains Out of Reach

EU-Turkey rapprochement is unlikely to result in Cyprus' reunification, but increased dialogue over the future of the island could improve the political climate, leading to mutually beneficial economic opportunities. Cyprus is pushing the European Union to appoint a special envoy to restart talks with Turkey over the reunification of the island, a third of which a Turkish-backed government controls.

European Parliament Rules Out Turkish Accession to EU
Closed-door negotiations between NATO and Ankara have irritated MEPs who rebuffed the likelihood of Turkish EU membership anytime soon in a report from the European Parliament’s foreign affairs committee this week.

A new report from the European Parliament’s foreign affairs committee has downplayed any EU commitment to endorse Turkey for EU membership despite President Erdoğan’s agreement, in principle, to greenlight Swedish membership of NATO on the explicit condition that Brussels takes the Turkish application to join the EU more seriously.

How Erdogan nimbly maneuvers Turkey’s foreign policy
BY RONALD H. LINDEN, OPINION CONTRIBUTOR - 07/19/23 11:00 AM ET
Turkey and Russia make for an odd pair. Turkey, a NATO member since 1952, host to a large U.S. military base, and jealous of its Black Sea prerogatives; Russia, on guard against Western encroachment and deeply humiliated by European gains and U.S. global dominance.

How to Save Turkish Democracy
To Rein in Erdogan, the Country Needs a Vibrant Left
By Halil Karaveli
July 14, 2023
For Turkish democrats, last spring was supposed to be a moment of triumph. After more than two decades of increasingly autocratic rule, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s president, appeared poised to lose office. The country’s robust economic growth—Erdogan’s longtime claim to fame—had ended. The Turkish lira was in free fall, making basic goods unaffordable for much of the population. When a devastating earthquake in February 2023 killed tens of thousands of people, Erdogan failed to properly respond. Polls suggested that the presidential election in May would be close but that opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu would emerge victorious.

The European Commission has rejected the surprising demand put forward by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
In remarks delivered on Monday morning, Erdoğan made a direct link between Sweden's bid to join the NATO military alliance, which his country continues to block, and Turkey's long-standing candidacy to become a member of the European Union, which has been on an effective standstill since 2018.
