So says the folks at CivicScience, a polling and data gathering firm in Pittsburgh which polled a large sample of people over the weekend.
- Some 33% of us have no plans, with 38% of us staying home tonight. Only 3% are hosting a party. Fourteen percent of us will be attending a party.
- Will we be watching TV? Some 37% say they won't be, with 35% watching a variety of New Year's Eve shows.
- And the party pooping continues. Some 64% of those polled say they have no family gathering on New Year's Day.

On November 20, the United States added another element to its sanctions against Iran. It now includes a ban on selling precious metals to the country. That bodes ill for Turkey, which was paying for its gas purchases with gold. Does this now mean that the problem is solved? I do not think so. It cannot end without securing energy for Turkey. Grapes are eaten one by one as an Arabic proverb says. Turkish-Iranian economic relations are not based on ideology, but on mutual dependence. That means that they fulfill an economic need and cannot be extinguished by law alone.

We are on the eve of a new year. Turkey is drawing raising figures in many areas as a result of its general direction, especially internal politics, general economic performance and the implementation of consistent policies. At the end of 2012, the economic data that are being declared about Turkey’s economy indicate various aspects. On one hand, the raise in the credit ratings and decrease in inflation reduced the current account deficit, improved expectations, and lowered interest rates and finally improved industrial production. On the other hand, there is the interrupted budget balance, slowed development rate and increase in unemployment. The implemented economic policies reduced the current account deficit and through reduced risks increases in the credit ratings are observed, but the fact remains that a recession in the capacity to create employment is being experienced as well.

Revitalised membership talks would benefit both parties
Turkey’s accession negotiations with the EU started in October 2005, were partly suspended in December 2006 and slowed to a halt four years later. The receding prospect of EU membership has served the short-term interests of certain political leaders in Ankara and western European capitals. But in the long run it will benefit neither Turkey nor the EU. Each side should treat 2013 as an opportunity to rebuild a relationship vitally important for the prosperity and security of Europe and its neighbourhood.

The role of the Obama administration in suppressing the long-running Kurdish uprising in Turkey is largely unknown. But a few weeks ago a U.S. diplomat dropped an intriguing clue. Francis J. Ricciardone, Jr., Obama's ambassador to Turkey, revealed that the U.S. had secretly offered Turkey what was, in effect, a bin Laden-style assassination of the top leadership of the PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party), the rebels who have been fighting the U.S.-equipped Turkish army since 1984.

Leon Elnekave, the affable leader of the dwindling Jewish community of Bursa, Turkey’s old Ottoman capital, met my wife and me on a narrow, cobbled lane and unlocked the black wrought iron gate to the 500-year-old Gerush Synagogue. As he led us into the landscaped courtyard, my wife, Sallie, suddenly began to cry. “I don’t know what it is,” she said, “but I feel like I’ve been here before.” An odd reaction, I thought to myself, for an American woman who converted to Judaism from Presbyterianism in middle age. But immersing yourself in a mystical place like this can provoke unexpected emotions.

You can therefore think of this party’s name as the “Party of God,” just like Hezbollah.

A THY Turkish Airlines Airbus A320-200, registration TC-JPN performing flight TK-1825 from Istanbul (Turkey) to Dusseldorf (Germany) with 130 passengers, was departing Istanbul Ataturk Airport's runway 35R when parts of the right hand engine cowling (V2527) departed the engine. The crew levelled off at 8000 feet and returned to Istanbul for a safe landing on ruway 35R about 40 minutes after departure.

Ireland will take over the next half-year term presidency of the Council of European Union which has already brought about a wide-range of discussions and optimistic commentaries with respect to Turkey’s recently stagnant relations with EU. A good majority of people from the Turkish side take this as good news, a positive change in the face of restructuring EU’s decision making bodies. Turkish EU Minister and the Chief Negotiator Egemen Bağış has so far made good remarks on the new stage of Turkey-EU integration talks that will assumedly follow a different path than negotiations during the preceding term under the Greek Cypriot presidency. He referred to the time period from 1st January onwards as a critical juncture and a historical turning point in regard to Turkey’s accession process for full membership in the EU.

(Reuters) - German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said on Friday the current stand-still in negotiations over Turkey's bid to join the European Union was unsatisfactory and the new year offered an opportunity to tackle outstanding issues with renewed vigour.

Snow Disrupted Air Travel in Istanbul
A number of flights have been delayed due to heavy snowfall at the Ataturk Airport in Istanbul.
While plains are being washed with anti-icing, water-alcohol mixture, snow plowers are also constantly working in the airport apron. In case of icing, the landing fields have been closed and controled by the teams of General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMI).

The infrastructure underpinned the two countries’ mutual dependence. But nowadays the balance of power has shifted. A third party, the Iraqi Kurds, has changed it. It is unclear who will emerge on top. But Iraq’s central government in Baghdad is on the defensive.

A deadly year for press freedom
A new report by Reporters Without Borders reveals the bleak dangers that journalists are faced with in their daily work. With 141 people killed, 2012 has been one of the worst years for press freedom in a long time.
"2012 was an extremely deadly year," says Ulrike Gruska of Reporters Without Borders (RSF). The organization's just-published annual report shows a total of 141 journalists, bloggers and media workers were killed because of their work. Of these, six were media employees and 47 were bloggers - the report describes these as "citizen journalists." In addition, 88 professional journalists were killed in the course of their duties - more than at any time since the introduction of the RSF annual reports in 1995.
2012 was particularly dangerous for citizen journalists, bloggers and Internet reporters. Five died in 2011 - but in 2012 there were 47 deaths around the world, 44 in Syria alone. "In Syria, many people have tried to break through the regime's information blockade," Gruska said, "by getting information out of the country, whether in the form of blogs and video messages or mobile phone videos. And we had to rely on this heavily in our Syria coverage in Germany because there were hardly any professional journalists on the ground."
Reporters Without Borders also counts Brazil among the most dangerous countries - even though it is the venue for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the Summer Olympic Games in 2016. Five reporters have died here - two were apparently murdered because they were researching cases of drug smuggling.
At present, 193 journalists are in prisons worldwide, 70 in Turkey alone. In the case of 42 of them, RSF is sure that there is a connection with their profession. China also imprisons professional and citizen journalists - at present there are about 100 behind bars, most of whom have been there for many years are are living in inhumane conditions. Often corrupt regional officials are behind the judgments, to get rid of their harshest critics.

Ankara: A joint statement of the trilateral seventh summit underway at Turkish capital was issued on Wednesday.
The summit consented formation of a joint commission that will investigate the cause of attack on a Afghan intelligence officer. It was also decided on the occasion that the three sides will continue holding joint military exercise. They also decided that cross-border infiltration and coordination in this regard will be improved will be stopped.

European Banking Union: In cautionary move, Europe centralizes bank oversight
European Union finance ministers reached an agreement early Thursday to create a single supervisor for their banks - one of the most significant transfers of authority from national governments to regional authorities since the creation of the euro currency.
Under the deal, banks with more than $39 billion in assets supervised or those that represent a significant proportion of their national economies will be placed under the oversight of the European Central Bank.
The deal gives the ECB broad powers, including the ability to grant and withdraw banking licenses, investigate institutions, and financially sanction banks that don't follow the rules.
But perhaps most important is that it paves the way for Europe's rescue fund to directly rescue the continent's troubled banks.
"It's real progress that opens up interesting possibilities," said French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici, without giving a specific date for when the first banks could seek direct aid.

I first read Orhan Pamuk’s childhood memoir of Istanbul three years ago, during a brief spell living in Ankara and before even having visited the city in question. It didn’t make much of an impression on me at the time, which is perhaps surprising as I was surely ripe to be wooed by it – surrounded as I was by the imagination-sapping ordinariness of Ankara. Still, its merits became more apparent to me on second reading, after having lived in Istanbul for almost three years.

The government minister made the argument that if the BDP’s members of parliament wish to be taken as serious political leaders in a democracy they must condemn the PKK’s terrorist acts. The challenge by Turkey’s EU minster follows a series of government statements that it may seek to end the immunity from prosecution parliamentary members enjoy if they do not renounce terrorism. Members of parliament are subject to investigation during their terms but they are immune from criminal prosecution unless the parliament votes to end an individual’s immunity.

ANKARA -- Germany's national assembly, Bundestag, is expected to hold a voting on deployment of air-defense missile batteries in Turkey against possible threat from Syria, German sources familiar to matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told The Anadolu Agency.
The deployment of two Patriot batteries along with an estimated 400 German soldiers along Turkey's border with Syria got a green light last week from the German Cabinet as part of a NATO request to help Ankara boost its air-defense capabilities to shoot down any missiles which might be fired from across the Syrian border.

Interestingly enough, while the Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) image that it would shed some old habits in the sphere of fundamental rights and freedoms has been short-lived; the one place that remains an area where the ruling party can quickly kill old habits is the economic sphere. There is no red line for the AKP if economic gain is in the picture. That’s why the AKP government has fast reversed Turkey’s old paranoia about the possibility of the creation of an independent state by Iraqi Kurds.

ISTANBUL (CIHAN)- The most radical and unflinching steps so far to tackle the century-old Kurdish issue on the basis of mutual understanding have been taken indisputably by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). Since its coming to power in 2002, the AKP has been not only a party for all downtrodden social groups, but also a pro-Kurdish party. Except for the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP), which pursued its policies under the armed tutelage of the terrorist organization Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), the AKP has been the only political party that could appeal to Kurdish voters. As a ruling party which has removed the majority of obstacles facing the use of the Kurdish language and which lends sincere support to boosting the welfare, rights and freedoms of our Kurdish citizens, the AKP has been able to secure the level of electoral support in the Kurdish-dominated eastern and southeaster provinces which it could not muster in the western provinces of the country.
