Turkish Government
By: Yavuz Baydar for Al-Monitor Turkey Pulse Posted on May 31.

Turkey’s Kurdish Policies Complicate Ties With Iran, Iraq
By: Fehim Taştekin for Al-Monitor Turkey Pulse Posted on May 30.
Turkey, once a shining star, with its foreign policy focused on image-building mediation roles, adopted an interventionist stance in the Syrian crisis and went from a “zero problems with neighbors” policy to “zero neighbors.” Ankara’s only consolation is its deepening ties with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in northern Iraq that both sides refer to as “strategic relations.” Without a doubt, their annual volume of trade, which has reached $9 billion, lends the impression of strategic depth, but the springtime weather along the Ankara-Erbil axis remains a bit unstable.

A windswept corner of rural western Turkey holds part of the answer. Fifty-two wind turbines strung along a series of hilltops close to the city of Balikesir constitute the biggest wind farm in the country.

EU should redefine PKK’s terrorist organization status after process: BDP co-chair
BRUSSELS - Anatolia News Agency
If the ongoing peace process is successful, there will be no need to keep the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) on the list of terrorist organizations, the co-chair of the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Selahattin Demirtaş said in Brussels May 29. “If the violence ends, the weapons end, it is not necessary to define [the PKK] as a terrorist organization. Quite on the contrary, this can put the process at risk,” Demirtaş said following a meeting with the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz and the head of the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee Hélène Flautre. “The [terrorist organizations] list should be reviewed in order to support and facilitate the transition of PKK militants to a normal life or to politics.”

The role of Turkey in the US-NATO-Israeli war on Syria
by Cem Ertür
When the U.S. and its allies launched the covert war on Syria in 2011, they were expecting that either Syria’s political establishment would collapse within a short duration or they would find a way to ignite an open war. As Syria’s leaders and people proved to be exceptionally resilient, increasingly more brutal means have been deployed to tear the country apart. Being at the forefront of this covert war in every respect, Turkey has been thoroughly complicit in monumental war crimes committed against the neighbouring people of Syria.

After Obama Meeting, Turkey's Erdogan Recalibrates Syria Policy
By Yigal Schleifer, on 29 May 2013, Briefing
Prior to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s mid-May visit to Washington, the expectation among many observers was that the Turkish leader would be coming to the White House to press a reluctant President Barack Obama to commit to supporting more forceful—that is, military—action against the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. However, Erdogan’s trip played out quite differently. Rather than Erdogan convincing Obama to change positions, it was the U.S. president who got the normally strong-willed Turkish prime minister to soften his tone and publicly support the Geneva II process, Washington’s effort to convene an international conference next month on solving the conflict in Syria, which Erdogan had previously dismissed.

Turkey and Syria’s Kurds Edging Toward an Uneasy Peace?
By: Amberin Zaman for Al-Monitor Turkey Pulse Posted on May 28.
As debate continues over Turkey’s controversial Syrian policy, its uneasy relationship with Syria’s Kurds, a crucial element in the equation, goes largely unnoticed. Deadly clashes between the Democratic Union Party (PYD), the most powerful Syrian Kurdish group, and jihadist militias in the mostly Kurdish Syrian towns of Afrin and Tir Tamar that erupted on May 25, will likely change this. Media outlets sympathetic to the PYD suggest that Turkey, together with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), its chief Iraqi Kurdish ally, are prodding the conflict.

Turkey, Iran Struggle To Keep Up Appearances
By: Semih Idiz for Al-Monitor Turkey Pulse Posted on May 28.
The pretense of good ties Ankara and Tehran have been trying to maintain despite the deepening of the Syrian crisis — in which the two countries are supporting opposite sides — has started to shatter. Iran is also expressing dissatisfaction over Turkey’s peace process with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which involves militants from the group moving out of Turkey into northern Iraq. While Turkey’s ties with Tehran become more confrontational, Ankara’s new regional enemy is turning out to be the Iranian-backed Lebanese Hezbollah.

The approximately 250 businesses are located in the city of Istanbul. Of these, many remain dormant and about 60 are considered the most important.

World's Happiest Countries: Australia Tops OECD Better Life Index and Turkey lowest- by Andy Reinhard
The Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is the latest institution to jump into the happiness-rating business with its new Better Life Initiative, a detailed survey of 24 indicators in 11 categories--ranging from civic engagement to environmental quality--across its 34 member states plus Brazil and Russia.
When all of the categories are weighted equally, the top-performing country in the world is Australia, cited for its strong community spirit and high level of life satisfaction. The lowest-ranked country among those studied was Turkey, whose weak scores on the same two criteria dragged it below Mexico, Chile, and Brazil. The US placed 3rd after Norway.

The Surprises of Turkish Gastronomy
Turkey - 28 May 13
Thinking of Turkish food, the first images that come to mind are probably meze, the thousand different small plates for sharing, or the great variety of börek (pastries made with yufka, phyllo dough) or the omnipresent kebabs. Rarely do we think of cheese, and at most we might think only of something white and brined, similar to feta. But we would be doing a great disservice to Turkish gastronomy.

Turkey Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to the United States this month and his discussions with President Barack Obama fell far short of meeting the challenges Turkey is confronting.
The visit also confirms that Turkey and other Middle East countries, including those that have strong relations with the U.S., are increasingly compelled to pursue their national security challenges with like-minded regional states.

In Turkey, the Foça Earth Market Turns One
From April 12 to 14, the town of Foça, on the Aegean coast of Turkey, a few kilometers from Izmir, celebrated its first anniversary of joining the network of Earth Markets with Terra Madre Foça'da, three days of events dedicated to good, clean and fair food.
"We needed an event to promote our ideas and the Slow Food philosophy," Gul Girismen told us. The leader of the Slow Food Foça Zeytindaliı Convivium continued: "Everyone keeps thinking of our market as an ‘organic market.' That's why we wanted to make it clear that ours is much more than a market of ecologically ‘clean' products. With the market, we are protecting our gastronomic traditions, adding value to many women's homemade products and contributing to the local economy of the surrounding small villages." Many different vegetables, herbs and lettuces are on sale at the market, all of excellent quality, as well as bread, preserves, mushrooms, cheese, milk, yogurt and flowers. Taste education activities and seed exchanges are also held at the market.
More than 20 producers from all over Anatolia participated in Terra Madre Foça'da (Terra Madre Foça in Turkish), bringing products like cheese from Kars, a town on the slopes of Mount Ararat famous for its aged cheeses and wide pastures, and wines from Bozcaada, an enchanting Aegean island that guards the entrance to the Dardanelles strait, where the winemaking tradition is rooted in the history and mythology of an ancient past. There was also apple vinegar, wild lavender jam, extra-virgin olive oil and sourdough bread, representing the inexhaustible cornucopia of Turkey's gastronomic riches.

Tension between Turkey and Iraq’s Shi’ite-led government over Ankara’s burgeoning ties with the oil-reach autonomous Kurdistan region and long support for Sunni-led anti-government protests in Baghdad seems to have gained a new dimension as Iraqi officials reject pleas to shelter the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants in their territory, something that might harm the ongoing peace process next door.

A new paradigm is in play in Turkey as the "Kurdish peace process" gains traction and Turkey's willing involvement in the Syrian crisis continues. The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government seeks to turn the tables on what many see as major regional crisis into an opportunity not to be missed for Turkey's momentous renewal; a "new Turkey" for a "new Middle East".

While I was in Cairo, I kept thinking the Egyptians should check out Istanbul. Both are megacities with over 10 million people. Both come from a poor and chaotic recent history. While Cairo struggles, Istanbul is zooming ahead. Just driving into town from the airport, I noticed landscaping along the highway (with fences to keep people out of the new gardens) and a clear delineation between people and traffic zones. While the architecture was still ramshackle/charming, there was almost no litter. It felt like northern Europe from a tidy point of view.

Istanbul’s Top Street Foods
May 24, 2013, by Istanbul Eats, Comments 0
As rapidly as Istanbul marches toward its modern destiny, street food in this city is still served the old-fashioned way, by boisterous ustas with a good pitch and, sometimes, a really good product. When the bars close, hungry Istanbulites cruise the streets looking for the gas lamp of a rice cart or listening for the call of a sucuk griller, on whom they pounce in a feeding frenzy. As informal as the dining may be, there is an irreplaceable human element – respect – at street food stalls and carts around the city. We like to celebrate these tasty Istanbul street eats and support the ustas who serve them, because, to us, there is no kebab without a real, live kebapçı serving it.

Sukru Celik: Turkey is a crucial destination for EU scrap exports
Thursday, 23 May 2013 18:03:54 (GMT+2)
Speaking at SteelOrbis Market Talks Meeting held in Istanbul on May 22, Turkey director of Belgian Scrap Terminal NV, Sukru Celik, discussed the Turkish steel industry and in particular its scrap imports in relation to Turkey's current account deficit which had hit a record level of $77 billion in 2011. Noting that the steel industry is one of the most important industrial sectors in Turkey, Mr. Celik stated that Turkish producers have to import scrap for their arc furnace steel production. Disagreeing with the idea that the country's steel industry increases Turkey's current account deficit, he said that steel scrap imports ultimately have a positive effect on the current account deficit as opposed to having to import finished steel products which would lead to a greater deficit.

Van Rompuy sees 'concrete steps' in Turkey's EU bid
by Daniel Mason
24 May 2013
There should soon be "concrete steps" forward in Turkey's stalled application to join the European Union, the president of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, predicted in a speech to business leaders in Ankara yesterday. He also claimed that one of the main roadblocks in the accession process, the Cyprus dispute, could be overcome by taking inspiration from the post-war reconciliation of Germany and France.
