ISTANBUL, Turkey — At the Piyalepasa animal bazaar there is a sense of anticipation. Buyers carefully make their way through crowds of people and livestock, the ground sodden with blood.

Why Turkey Was the Iraq War's Real Winner | Newsweek International | Newsweek.com
Turkey is the surprising beneficiary of our misadventures in the Middle East.
By Owen Matthews and Christopher Dickey | NEWSWEEK
Published Nov 28, 2009
Archibald Wavell himself could scarcely have imagined how horribly accurate his prediction would prove to be. Having watched in dismay as the victorious European powers carved up the Ottoman Empire after World War I—"the war to end war"—the British officer commented that they had instead created "a peace to end peace." And sure enough, the decades since have spawned a succession of colonial misrule, coups, revolutions, and an epidemic of jihadist violence. The U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 could be viewed as a last-ditch attempt by the world's sole remaining superpower to impose order on the region. Instead, the net result was to create a power vacuum, leaving Iraq too weak to counterbalance its neighbors and threatening to destabilize the whole map."

Preface
Contemporary Turkish politics is striking for many reasons, not least the
fundamentally opposing and mutually exclusive narratives by which
domestic as well as foreign observers describe its major fault lines. Hence the
irreconcilable descriptions of the ruling Justice and Development Party
(AKP) government, in power since 2002: its supporters describe it as a the
Muslim world’s equivalent of Christian Democracy, the political force that is
ridding Turkey of its authoritarian past and making it a European
democracy. Its detractors, however, accuse it of seeking to Islamicize the
country’s state and society, muzzling independent media and criticism,
moving it in the direction of authoritarianism, and in the process driving
Turkey away from Europe. Descriptions of the mainly nationalist opposition
to the AKP are equally divided, ranging from seeing these forces as wellintentioned
supporters of Turkey’s secular republic to being authoritarianminded,
fascistoid groups that clamor for a return to military rule.

EU - Rehn's final advice: 'No discount' on enlargement and Turkey firmly on European Track"
The European Parliament held a heated debate yesterday (25 November) on future EU enlargement but also offered congratulations to Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn, who is expected to take a different portfolio in the Barroso II team.Olli Rehn, the quiet Finn who once humbly described himself as "only the factory manager" in the gigantic effort of preparing countries for EU membership, summed up his five-year term by saying that five years ago, he had wanted to see a number of things achieved by the end of 2009:
* An EU of 27 member states;
* Croatia's accession process entering the final stages;
* the other Western Balkan countries anchored in the EU through Stabilization and Association Agreements (SAAs);
* Turkey firmly on a European track;
* Kosovo's status settled, and;
* Cyprus reunified.

Geert Wilders: " "The Turkish army is the greatest defender of Kemal Ataturk's legacy
Spiegel: "The Turkish government fears a scheduled visit by Dutch anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders, saying it could dent Turkish relations with the Netherlands and Europe. The Turkish government says it fears a scheduled visit by Dutch anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders, saying it could dent Turkish relations with the Netherlands and Europe. But many secular and religious Turks say they would welcome a debate with the polemic politician.
"Normally, the army belongs in the barracks. But I will make an exception for Turkey." Wilders wrote. "The Turkish army is the greatest defender of Kemal Ataturk's legacy, the man who compared Islam with a rotting corpse. Without the corrective influence of the army, Turkey would already be a second Iran." This position is incomprehensible and indefensible, said Mustafa Akyol, a columnist and deputy editor of the Turkish Daily News and a practicing Muslim. "Wilders forgets that Ataturk in his time (the 1920 and 30s) turned Turkey's face to the West, but that the West wasn't a very pleasant place at the time. Many of the European fascist and nationalist ideologies of the time, like that of authoritarian one-party states, were thus imported to Turkey and the secular Turks have held onto them until now.''
Note EU-Digest: Mr. Wilders, a one dimensional politician, who usually is completely off the track when it comes to conventional political activities and historical research, this time certainly read up well on Turkish history and Ataturk's legendary vision about Islam and the dangers of Islam or any other religion openly or covertly imposed as a State religion.

Ankara is seeking peace and reconciliation in the Middle East, but has not turned its back on the West
* By Patrick Seale, Special to Gulf News
In launching his ‘Democratic Opening' towards Turkey's 15 million Kurds earlier this month, Prime Minister Tayyip Recep Erdogan has embarked on possibly the most perilous phase of his political career.
His Kurdish initiative could lose him precious votes in the next election. If it misfires, it could even bring an end to the Justice and Development Party's (AKP) domination of the Turkish political landscape, which began with its first electoral victory in 2002. The initiative has already aroused the fierce hostility of diehard Turkish nationalists, who condemn it as a treasonous plot to dismember the country."

Talking Turkey

With the US-led efforts to relaunch Palestinian-Israel peace negotiations stalled, there's talk of Washington and Jerusalem turning their attention to the Syrian track, but how promising is that?

A new foreign policy of Turkey
November 26, 2009 – 12:51 am
In recent years, Turkey, in the unanimous opinion of political scientists, seeks to revise its geopolitical role. Ankara is trying to fundamentally change its geopolitical “positioning” as in the Greater Caucasus, and throughout the world politics. In particular, today Ankara is not going to limit themselves only to “related liabilities” in relation to Azerbaijan. What, of course, do not really like some of the leaders in Baku, and in some other places far from the Azerbaijani capital."

What to do about American nukes in Turkey
I'll bet a lot of you didn't know that NATO stores American nuclear weapons in Turkey. Frankly, neither did I. But they do.
For more than 40 years, Turkey has been a quiet custodian of U.S. tactical nuclear weapons. During the Cold War, Washington positioned intermediate-range nuclear missiles and bombers there to serve as a bulwark against the Soviet Union (i.e., to defend the region against Soviet attack and to influence Soviet strategic calculations). In the event of a Soviet assault on Europe, the weapons were to be fired as one of the first retaliatory shots. But as the Cold War waned, so, too, did the weapons' strategic value. Thus, over the last few decades, the United States has removed all of its intermediate-range missiles from Turkey and reduced its other nuclear weapons there through gradual redeployments and arms control agreements."

"The Turkish army is the greatest defender of Kemal Ataturk's legacy, the man who compared Islam with a rotting corpse. Without the corrective influence of the army, Turkey would already be a second Iran."
"Wilders solution is wrong," says Turkish columnist Leyla Tavşanoğlu, "It is precisely because of these fears that we should admit Turkey into the European Union. Or we will lose this country to radical Islam and Europe will have a second Iran at its border. Surely that's not what he wants.""

Realpolitik and Referendums: The EU's role in deciding Omar al-Bashir's fate
Last week, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir controversially decided against attending a summit of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in Istanbul, Turkey. Sudan’s state-run news agency, Suna, reported that “new developments” in the North African nation had forced him to stay put. President Bashir, who has controlled conflict-ridden Sudan for the past 20 years, is facing extradition for war crimes and crimes against humanity, charges levelled at him by the International Criminal Court (ICC). Yet, even though the arrest warrant was issued as far back as March, he has since travelled freely to other African countries. At the African Union summit earlier this year, the continent’s leaders, in defiance of the ICC, voted overwhelmingly in favour of supporting the infamous Bashir. And the BBC reports that Turkey, host of the OIC summit, initially assured the Sudanese president he would not be arrested if he chose to attend."

A New EU in the Making: Reflections from Turkey
European Union With Turkey
Monday, 23 November 2009
After a long period of speculations and intergovernmental tug-of-wars, the EU finally elected its new president and foreign policy chief. Taking the profiles of the recently elected politicians into consideration, it can be confidently said that the EU disappointed may people who believe in an 'ever closer Union' and a more 'proactive Europe' at the international fora. The new President, the Belgium Prime Minister Herman Von Rompuy, and the new foreign policy chief from the intergovernmentalist Britain, namely Catherine Aston, aroused question marks in the minds of observers. In this regard, one of the most frequently asked questions, for example, is the extent to which Rompuy and Ashton will stand out among the leaders of the other great powers. Given the pair's relative inexperience and low profile political standing 'neither will be able to stand alongside the US, Russian or Chinese leaders as peers and equals', as the British daily The Guardian writes."

Slipping in Turkey
An Islamist government's commitment to democratic principles is looking shaky.
Monday, November 23, 2009
RECEP TAYYIP ERDOGAN has been the protagonist of an epic liberalization of politics in Turkey. The victory of his mildly Islamist AK Party in a 2002 general election was itself a breakthrough; even more so was his government's defeat of repeated attempts by the military and courts to remove it from power. Mr. Erdogan is pushing through historic reforms of Turkey's treatment of its Kurdish minority and recently took a major step toward opening the country's border with Armenia."

Alon Ben-Meir

Although the strategic relations between the two regional superpowers is critical to both nations it also transcends the bilateral benefits that Turkey and Israel individually derive from it, as their alliance is fundamental to the region's balance of power and political stability."
