Turkey and the development of democracy in the Middle East

Turkey and the development of democracy in the Middle East

Yaşar Yakış
Sunday, 01 February 2015 09:00

The evolution of democracy in the Middle East in its contemporary sense has gone through various stages. The first was the Ottoman period. With the exception of Iran and Morocco, almost all Middle Eastern countries were part of the Ottoman State for centuries. It is reasonable to say, therefore, that both democracy and the absence thereof must have been at comparable levels across the region for centuries, though some areas may have experienced better democracy than others.

The Peninsula Qatar - Turkey and the Gulf

Turkey and the Gulf
February 01, 2015 - 3:24:41 am
Dr Khalid Al Jaber

Are new steps being taken towards enhancing ties between the Gulf and Turkey? If not, I think it is time to take some serious measures in this direction. The chill in relations between the two sides witnessed in the aftermath of the Arab Spring and the coldness marking the relations due to the crises in Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Palestine and more specifically the Gaza Strip, in addition to some economic and investment issues, do not augur well for the region. We can notice that relations on Turkey have formed around two axes – first led by the UAE and Saudi, which is conservative in its approach, and the second by Qatar and Kuwait, which is more flexible, both of which are moving in different directions.

The Battle of Gallipoli was one of the most critical scenes in Turkey's history. Britain and France opened an overseas front in Gallipoli in East Thrace and tried to overcome the Ottomans. The Russian Empire was promised the capital Istanbul by the two of Entente Powers of World War I. It was a fight for the survival of a nation, a struggle for life or death.

Why is Turkey censoring lingerie, antique books?

When did Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), which has been praised by international media for its democratic reforms during its first few years in power, start to turn into what it is today — a ruthless political machine that cracks down on free speech with increasingly potent tools, insisting on its "unconstitutional" course as was seen in the Jan. 28 debate at the parliament?

30.01.2015

Q: Can you give us a history of the Islamic State? How did they rise to power after the [2003] US-NATO invasion of Iraq?

A: You have to go to 1979 when Brzezinski was the National Security Advisor to Jimmy Carter, [when he] convinced the president to sign a secret authorization to begin covert operations in Afghanistan, six months before the Soviets arrived around Christmastime of 1979. Known as the Bernard-Lewis Plan, it involved promoting Islamic Fundamentalism all across the Southern tier of the Soviet Union. When the Soviets finally moved in, things became concentrated in building up a radical Islamic terrorist apparatus, sponsored by the US, British, Saudis, French, and Israelis.

“Kobani is free. ‘Heroin, Organized Crime, and the Making of Modern Turkey’ by Ryan Gingeras (Oxford University Press, 290 pages, £65)

On the morning of Nov. 4, 1996, Turkey woke up to news of a car crash near the small town of Susurluk, just south of Istanbul. The accident on a quiet country road seemed ordinary enough, but it was the four passengers inside the new model Mercedes - three dead and one seriously injured – who made national headlines. They included a former beauty pageant winner, an Istanbul police chief, a Kurdish member of parliament, and an ultra-nationalist contract killer who was on Interpol’s red list. The scandal lifted the lid on the murky alliance between the Turkish military, members of the ruling party, security officials, and organized crime, and commanded the news agenda for weeks.

Russia’s termination of South Stream and proposal for Turkish Stream has appeared as a result and also a necessity given the emerging geopolitical and geo-economic dynamics in Moscow-West relations. In addition to the difficulties faced by Gazprom (which were caused by the Third Energy Package in the European gas market), the Ukraine crisis and tough Western sanctions have required an update in Moscow’s own energy strategy. Moreover, ongoing work on building an EU Energy Union, which would standardize gas prices within the Union, have hastened Gazprom’s strategy.

Turkey's Economic Transition and Transatlantic Relations

February 18, 2015

10:30 AM - 12:00 PM EST

Brookings Institution

Washington, DC

In 2014 the World Bank published two important reports on the Turkish economy. The first report published in the Spring assessed the customs union (CU) between Turkey and the European Union, concluding that both sides had benefitted but the CU was in need of modernization. A second World Bank report focused on Turkey’s emergence over the last two decades as a dynamic, growth-oriented economy and manufacturing and export powerhouse. However, this report also warned that without further reforms, Turkey risks becoming stuck in a “middle income trap”. At a time when concerns are growing about Turkey’s geopolitical orientation, its commitment to the West and its allegiance to liberal democratic values, could Turkey’s ongoing economic transition become a means to re-anchor Turkey to the transatlantic community?

There are now some 9 million Syrian refugees and it is estimated that 5,000 additional refugees are created every day. Over 5 million Syrians reside in neighboring countries, principally Jordan (800,000), Lebanon (1.8 million) and Turkey (1.8 million). Europe and the West have been largely closed to these refugees with desperate boat journeys the stuff of daily news items. The crisis is not abating, and with 2 million refugees in Iraq the problem is expanding. What is clear is that many of these refugees are unlikely to be going home soon, if ever.

The New York Times reports that President Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday Turkey would seek the closure of schools in Africa linked to his ally-turned-foe Fethullah Gulen, who is accused in the judiciary and police of seeking to establish a "parallel state" and of orchestrating a corruption investigation targeting Erdogan's inner circle. Followers of Gulen's Hizmet (Service) movement run a network of schools in Turkey and across the world, including in Africa. "They might have established educational institutions, but they will be closed down because the Republic of Turkey education ministry will be providing the needed services for students," he told a news conference in Addis Ababa.

Turkey, perhaps better than anywhere else, illustrates the broad role gold can play in modern society. At an average of 181 tonnes (t) per annum over the past 10 years, Turkey is the world’s fourth largest consumer of gold accounting for around 6% of global consumer demand, and we estimate that Turkish households have accumulated at least 3,500t of gold “under-the-pillow”.

Turkey's predominantly Kurdish southeast has been rocked by fatal confrontations between Islamist and nationalist Kurds. The violence was sparked by fighting just across the Syrian border, where terror group "Islamic State" is continuing to lay siege to the Kurdish city of Kobani. The clashes are resurrecting decades-old wounds between religious and secular Kurds.

After Kobani, where is Islamic State's next target? - Al-Monitor: the Pulse of the Middle East

After Kobani, where is Islamic State's next target?

In a newspaper interview in November 2013, Salih Muslim, the co-chairman of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party of Syria (PYD) had predicted: “The situation in Hasakah is sensitive. If pushed, it could lead to Kurdish-Arab clashes.” News reports from the northeast Syria town of Hasakah, which we don’t usually hear much about, proved Muslim’s warnings were on the mark. Clashes that erupted in Hasakah on Jan. 17 between the PYD’s military wing, the People's Defense Units (YPG) and National Defense Forces, an auxiliary of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s army, couldn’t be halted and inflicted casualties on both sides.
