Turkey: Manufacturing

"Turkey: Manufacturing

(EIU Viewswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) COUNTRY BACKGROUND

FROM THE ECONOMIST INTELLIGENCE UNIT

Manufacturing accounts for 90% of total exports of goods

Manufacturing output has been a major driver of economic growth since the 1960s. Including basic processing industries like iron and steel and oil refining, it accounts for well over 90% of merchandise exports and 17-18% of employment. Most kinds of consumer goods are domestically manufactured in significant quantity and variety. However, in some areas, a modern domestic industry never developed (mobile telephones, cameras, timepieces) or imports have come to dominate the market (small household appliances and utensils). Industrial machinery and a wide variety of industrial materials, such as chemicals, plastics and building materials, are also produced within the country, although not always in sufficient quantity or variety to meet domestic demand. Production of electronic components and some other industrial parts is limited. The majority of exports are made up of consumer goods. The television industry and a large section of the clothing and textiles industry are primarily geared to exporting, and numerous other manufacturing industries export a significant share of their output."

“Are you serious? “The Turkish ones are so tasty,” said Armine, still wavering. In the end, she reconsidered, “All right, give me two packs of Armenian seeds.” "

Matti Vanhanen, Finnish prime minister, admitted that the risk of a bust-up with Turkey threatened to cast a shadow over his country’s six-month stint at the EU’s helm, and said he would view the breakdown of the talks as a personal failure."

Just last year Turkey was one of the world's best-performing markets, and foreign investors, seduced by a robust currency and quiescent inflation, invested there with abandon."

Enlargement fatigue but only for Turkey

"Enlargement fatigue but only for Turkey

30.06.2006

Showing off to their public, the French government seeks to impose EU’s ‘absorption capacity’ as a new condition for further EU enlargements.

By Umut Uras

It is a regular method for EU member state governments to blame their own failures on the European Union (EU). Actually it has become a regular tool for governments to use the EU as a scapegoat.
For example, a government could secretly lobby for a positive decision in the Council of Ministers through alternative methods, whereas it could vote against it just to satisfy public opinion. Or similarly, when a decision is certain according to qualified majority voting, again it can vote against it only to satisfy public opinion and increase its reputation. France's stance towards Turkey's membership is a good example."

This is the highest amount, per capita, of aid ever given by the EU. According to the decision an office will be set up in the North for the purpose of managing the aid; it will not be autonomous, as the overall supervision of the package will come under the Commission's offices in the Southern part of the island. By Talip Küçükcan

Many observers fail to see the unique position of Turkey concerning state, society and religion in the country mainly because they concentrate on recent reports in the mass media, which usually reports tensions and fears. Therefore, analysis on these issues can only touch the surface and fail to grasp the persistent multidimensional modern Turkey.
Turkey occupies a unique place among the modern nation states, not only from a geopolitical point of view, but also from cultural and religious points of view. Turkey lies at the crossroads between eastern and western interests. The political and cultural identity of modern Turkey emerged under the influence of domestic and external forces that existed in and around Turkey throughout the centuries."

Power and torture - by Mark Mardell (the Cia Midnight Express)

If you are offered a cheap flight on "Stevens Express" or "Premier Executive" my advice is: don't take it. I hear the food is atrocious and in-cabin service particularly poor on "Presidential aviation". These are some of the cover names used by the CIA for flights, which the Council of Europe claims were used to move kidnapped suspected terrorists through European airspace, and European airports, to countries where they could be tortured.

The flight log reads like the route plan of a particularly desperate budget airline. Banjul to Cairo, to Kabul, to Tashkent, to Frankfurt, to Turkey, to Rabat back to Kabul, sounds like a packed five days. Now the Council of Europe has voted that foreign intelligence services operating in Europe should be much more closely monitored, within a strict system of rules setting out what is legal and what is not. "Will the European States in question listen, of course not - they apply the rule "Do as I say, not as I do."

International Journalists’ Network: Armenia gets mixed reviews from international observers

International Journalists’ Network

While there have been relatively few documented attacks on Armenian journalists in recent months, reporting there remains clearly biased, according to a European media watchdog.

Miklos Haraszti, media freedom representative for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), recently paid a three-day visit to Armenia. He said on June 21 that “the coverage of political life still remains one-sided, both in private and public-service broadcasting.”

Although the constitution protects freedom of the press, the government continues to restrict full media freedom in the country, observers say. Most newspapers rely on funds from the government, politically motivated individuals or parties to survive, and objectivity suffers.

One week is not a long time in Turkish politics; it is a very long time. All the same, one could safely predict that the next time the Turks will go to ballot boxes they will not be voting for their choice of political parties only, but also for their choice of ideology along Islamist versus secularist lines. The trouble is a great majority of Turks happen to be in the huge intersection group: good Muslims and devout republicans. "

While persecution of Christians in Chinese cities has apparently decreased, persecution of a Turkish people in northwestern China is still terrible, as this Wall Street Journal column attests: 'Uighur women are sterilized or forced to have abortions because the Chinese government says they are too poor to afford to have families.... Uighur mosques are closed, their imams jailed, while parents are forbidden from teaching religion to their children. By Timothy R. Furnish

As the American occupation of Iraq has entered its fourth frustrating year, some conservative commentators have joined the Bush Administration’s detractors on the left and given in to despair about ever incubating democracy in a majority-Muslim country. In this view “our failure to establish liberty and justice for all in Iraq—namely, freedom of conscience and freedom before the law—is dueto the nature of Islamic culture, not to the efficacy of American efforts”1 [emphasis added]. A related assertion of even longer pedigree is that Israel is the only state in the region with a history of democratic practices.2 But are these two pessimistic views true?"

USATODAY.com - Young Muslim women in Europe go to extremes to be virgins again

SAINT-DENIS, France (AP) — Chastity can exact a painful price from young Muslim women, forced into lies or surgery to go to the marriage bed as virgins.

Hymen repair, fake virginity certificates and other deceptions, said to be commonplace in some Muslim countries, are practiced in France and elsewhere in Europe, where Muslim girls are more emancipated but still live under rigid codes of family honor. Such ploys have saved many a young woman from scorn and worse. But they also clash with the more liberal social mores of France and Europe, where some decry it as an attack on human rights.

The procedures are legal but shrouded in silence — "something that passes through non-official channels," via friends or the Internet, said Dr. Nathan Wrobel. "There are circuits that lead women to me."

Wrobel is one of an unknown number of gynecologists in France who are willing to repair hymens, the membrane usually broken by the first act of sexual intercourse. He was one of the few doctors willing to talk about it.

BERLIN (Reuters) - Turkey never made it on to the pitch at the World Cup finals but the soccer frenzy could prove a chance for its countrymen living in Germany to strike up a whole new relationship with their host nation.

Germany's relationship with its Turkish population -- accounting for the largest group of foreigners living in the country -- has often been difficult and distant over the past few years, said Celal Altun, head of Berlin's Turkish Community.

But now it could all change as a nation, surprised by its own soccer-fuelled, newly found national identity, seems to have been even more taken aback to find that their compatriots of Turkish descent standing right next to them, also happily waving the black-red-golden flag."

Sun Jun 25, 2006 2:15 PM GMT172

By Daren Butler

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkey has welcomed a FIFA decision to halve its punishment for violence at a World Cup qualifier against Switzerland which boosts its chances of reaching the 2008 European championship.

FIFA ruled Turkey must play its next three home competitive matches behind closed doors on neutral territory after players and officials brawled at the game last November in Istanbul.

The original sanction, imposed in February, covered six matches.

Turkey will now be able to play qualifying matches against Hungary, Bosnia and Greece in front of its fans in Turkey, providing there is no trouble in the run-up games.

"Great news for Turkey," said the headline in the sports newspaper Fotomac. "Victory," said a Fanatik daily headline."

The two contradictory features of Turkish society - Turkish Daily News Jun 25, 2006

"The two contradictory features of Turkish society
Sunday, June 25, 2006

Elif Şafak

One of the two most surprising features of Turkish society is its continual ability and unyielding desire to change. Transformation and adjustment compose two basic threads in the fabric of this culture. Over the last hundred years there have been a series of radical shifts in the social, cultural and political matrix in Turkey. As the country moved from a multiethnic, multi-religious, traditional imperial structure to a modern, secular nation-state, its elite decided not to belong to Eastern civilization anymore and opted for being part and parcel of Western civilization. Now how much and how successfully that goal has been realized might be a matter of dispute today but what remains indisputable is the amazing ambition and aptitude of the cultural and political elite in Turkey to trigger social change. The Republican regime has been profoundly effectual and determined in launching a momentous transformation that would penetrate into multiple layers of the society. "

In the days before borders and nationhood, there was baklava

"In the days before borders and nationhood, there was baklava
By Leo Leonidou

So who owns it now?

A NEW ROW has erupted over the famous traditional sweet dish baklava, with several different countries claiming it as their own.

Last month, the origin of baklava came to a head when the Austrian presidency of the European Union, celebrating Europe Day with the Caf? Europe initiative, distributed a poster that presented baklava as a Cypriot national dessert. Turkey argued that the dish is of Turkish origin, as the name has an affiliation with oklava (Turkish for rolling pin) that’s used in the preparation and the word baklava carries the characteristic of a Turkish word, while Greece argued that the dish is of Byzantine origin, and thus best represented as Greek cuisine.

Turkish State Minister and EU Chief Negotiator Ali Babacan has even lodged a protest in the EU General Secretariat."

Europe 'ignoring Turkmen human rights abuses' - by Jerome Taylor

The EU has been accused of ignoring human rights abuses in Turkmenistan by considering a trade agreement with the repressive former Soviet republic despite a recent crackdown on political dissidents and human rights activists.A delegation of five MEPs returned from the Turkmen capital, Ashgabat, yesterday following a fact-finding mission to see if the EU could breath life into a trade agreement with Turkmenistan and tap into the country's huge gas reserves.

Martin Callanan, one of the five MEPs on the fact-finding mission, yesterday accused the EU of ignoring human rights abuses for commercial benefit. "The EU is being completely hypocritical," he said. "We isolate a country like Belarus, which isn't half as repressive as Turkmenistan but the sad reality is that Belarus doesn't have lots of gas and oil reserves."In the past week, Turkmen security forces have arrested three human rights activists and four of their relatives in what campaigners say is one of the worst crackdowns on civil society since November 2002

Turkey’s foes ‘exploiting Cyprus issue in the EU’

"Turkey’s foes ‘exploiting Cyprus issue in the EU’
By Zerin Elci

OPPONENTS of Turkey's bid to join the European Union are exploiting the Cyprus issue and divisions within the bloc to obstruct Ankara's progress towards membership, a senior Turkish diplomat said.

Ankara is under growing pressure to move towards recognition of EU member state Cyprus' internationally accepted Greek Cypriot government, a move it categorically rejects without a solution to the Cyprus problem.

The EU is still reeling from the twin rejection of its draft constitution by French and Dutch voters in referenda last year that critics say has left the 25-nation bloc directionless.

The increased tensions between Turkey and the EU have spooked financial markets in recent weeks, contributing to a big drop in the lira currency and share prices.
