If Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s prime minister, is irritated by the European Union’s reluctance to embrace his country wholeheartedly, he was hiding it well on a visit to Strasbourg this week.
That was perhaps because he was there to speak to the Council of Europe, the continent’s paramount human rights body that readily acknowledges the big democratic strides Turkey has taken under his government. The European Commission, by contrast, with which Ankara is negotiating its EU accession, has taken to scolding Turkey regularly about its shortcomings."
