Race for Gas by Cypriot Rivals Adds to Tensions
By JAMES KANTER

SINIRUSTU, Cyprus — The island of Cyprus, split by one of Europe’s most intractable ethnic conflicts, is now the focus of another contest, over who will control the significant natural gas wealth found in nearby waters. The question is whether the gas discovery will become an incentive for the two sides to cooperate, or yet another obstacle to reunification of the island.

Erdogan’s counterproductive ambition
Recep Tayyip Erdogan is too focused on becoming Turkey’s next president

Sep 1st 2012 | ANKARA AND ISTANBUL | from the print edition

THE Turkish prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has recently been seen sporting a Cossack-style hat like Ataturk’s. Kemalists were horrified. Yet nobody could dispute that Mr Erdogan has been Turkey’s most impressive leader since the great man’s death in 1938. His mildly Islamist Justice and Development (AK) party came to power in 2002 on a wave of popular support and a rejection of decades of inept rule. Mr Erdogan has lifted Turkey out of stagnation and political paralysis and made it an inspiration in its region.

Europe: Dream of Power or Power of the Dream?
30/08/2012 By Kader Sevinc 12 Comments

When I was growing up in Turkey, Europe was omni-present in school text books, on TV, in the media and the daily social life conversations within my family or with friends. Europe was often associated with dreams and Europe meant hope. Dreams for peace, for good economic standards, for social progress. A dream which was already becoming reality. A best practice for the rest of the world.

Kassandra Fotiadis: My Summer in Turkey

My Summer in Turkey
Posted: 08/30/2012 9:16 am

This summer, I received a scholarship from the U.S. government to study in Turkey for seven weeks. My parents reacted with nothing but whoops of excitement and proud smiles as they told their friends; everyone else, however, was impressed, but immediately concerned for my safety. According to them, I had three things working against me: I was American, I was Christian, and I was Greek. Going to Turkey would be dangerous, they thought. I could see the visions of the film Midnight Express and the memory of 9/11 running through their brains as I told them that I would be living in a country that was 99.9 percent Muslim. I took my cross off from around my neck at JFK airport and packed floor-length skirts and shawls, ready, but somewhat nervous, to embark on my adventure.

Before I left Istanbul, Barçin Yinanç, the opinion editor of Turkey's English-language Hürriyet Daily News wrote a column that deserves attention. I reproduce it here:

I was in elementary school when I decided to become a journalist; I later started to work as a reporter in 1990. I tremendously enjoyed my profession as a diplomatic reporter, as the end of the Cold War brought with it tremendous dynamism to Turkish foreign policy. By the end of 1990s, I sort of entered a midlife crisis triggered by the state of affairs in Turkish journalism.

Turkey is as complex as a Byzantine mosaic or a potent Turkish coffee. For decades an economic backwater, it’s now the fastest-growing economy in Europe.

ISTANBUL (AP) - In 2003, Turkey barred U.S. forces from opening a northern front in the war against Iraq in a stunning rebuff to Washington that raised questions about whether the politically powerful Turkish military had undercut a civilian-led initiative to help the Americans. As Turkey and its allies mull possible intervention in Syria, the Turkish military, broken as a political force, is likely to move in step with the civilian commanders it once viewed with disdain.

At the peak of their rapprochement, Turkey and Syria were holding joint cabinet meetings and talking about spearheading a common market in the Middle East. Then the Arab wave of reforms reached Damascus. The relationship turned hostile as the Syrian leadership resisted reforms and engaged in large-scale massacres to subdue the opposition.

Irrespective of how much we bury our heads in the sand like ostriches, we fool only ourselves: Turkey’s foreign policy is a shambles, and stinks very badly. Although Turkey is not an Arab country, the Arab Spring is shaping Turkish affairs in important ways. Political changes in the country’s neighborhood have ended the equilibrium between Syria, Turkey, and Iran over the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a group that has waged a violent campaign against Turkey for decades. This has meant the end of the Pax Adana, a regional balance characterized by the Syrian and Iranian promise not to support the PKK.

TEATIME IN ISTANBUL IS NOT OFTEN a Proustian moment. It is hardly Proustian at all, in fact. But in the palatial home of Serdar Gülgün in Cengelköy, on the Asian side of the Bosphorus, that precious adjective earns its keep. The slender, boyishly elegant Gülgün arrives at the door of his house on the fancifully named Feyzullah Street dressed in blue-velvet tasseled slippers and matching socks. The street's name, he explains at once, is almost a joke—his house was built by an exiled Hungarian officer in the 1850s, a man who took on the pseudo-Oriental name of Feyzullah.

Canada declares bogus Turkish refugee a war criminal

Turkish refugee
August 19, 2012
By: Steffan Ileman

It's hard for any refugee claimant, nowadays, to convince Canada's Immigration & Refugee Board (IRB) that he or she is a real refugee since most claims are rejected offhand as lacking credibility. This claimant's problem isn't that the Board didn't believe him. His problem is that the IRB was only too willing to believe everything he said about the story allegedly created by a member of a terrorist organisation, and his claim was rejected for the wrong reasons.

Turkey, a nation with a growing economy and a role model for the Middle East, is still leaving a third of its women behind.

Unemployment is one of the biggest problems in Turkey and in the United States as well. And the financially “unserved” and “unrealized” work force — largely made up of unemployed women — has huge potential. Both of our nations could reduce the unemployment rate by encouraging women to engage in entrepreneurial activities.
