Jun 30th 2011 | ISTANBUL
RIDING on pledges of continued stability and more democracy, on June 12th Turkey’s conservative Justice and Development (AK) party was returned to an unprecedented third term of office. In his victory speech the prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, declared that he would work with the opposition to write a new constitution. Yet a fortnight later the country seems on the verge of political deadlock. At the opening session of the new parliament almost one-third of the deputies refused to be sworn in."

There are many gaps in the socioeconomics fabric of this world. The technological divide, which represents the huge difference in available technologies in between the developed and undeveloped world, is one of the most important of those divides. The inequality of technology is one of the fundamental reasons why the developed world is falling ever behind. "UNDERSTANDING TURKEY’S 2011 GENERAL ELECTION RESULTS

By Gerald Robbins

June 2011

Gerald Robbins is a Senior Fellow of the Foreign Policy Research Institute, specializing in analyzing Turkey, the Caucasus region, and Central Asia.

Now that the results are known from Turkey’s June 12 general election, it is an appropriate time to discern this strategically important nation’s state of affairs. Turkey-watching is never an easy matter, especially given the current government’s fluctuating ways which confound many analysts. Nearly a decade has passed since the Justice and Development came to power with its heavily-inspired Islamist thinking. Detractors see the AKP’s methodology as a stealth jihad that’s gradually eroding the country’s secularist bearings. Conversely, AKP’s proponents applaud the various reforms which the party has enacted, ostensibly projecting it as a “bridge” between Western and Muslim civilizations. Whatever the case may be, the Turkish post-electoral environment is at a critical crossroad with far-reaching implications for its society and beyond."

The last time such a high number of deputies were missing at the inaugural session of parliament was perhaps in the 1920 inaugural session of the Turkish parliament in Ankara. Many deputies were loyal to the sultan and die-hard opponent of the “traitors” in Anatolia. The Dutch parliament voted on Tuesday to ban ritual slaughter of animals, a move strongly opposed by the country’s Muslim and Jewish minorities, but left a loophole that might let religious butchering continue. The bill by the small Animal Rights Party, the first such group in Europe to win seats in a national parliament, passed the lower house of parliament by 116 votes to 30. It must be approved by the upper house before becoming law. It stipulates that livestock must be stunned before being slaughtered, contrary to the Muslim halal and Jewish kosher laws that require animals to be fully conscious."

Turkey: time for reassessment - by Morten Messerschmidt and Robert Ellis

The remarkable thing about the Turkish election result is not that Prime Minister Erdoğan’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) won but the unanimity in the international press that it would not be good for Turkish democracy if they gained 330 seats or more in the Turkish parliament. In the event, half the votes only resulted in 326 seats, falling short of the 330 seats needed to change the constitution with a referendum and the 367 seats which would have made it possible for the government to change the constitution alone.

The other common denominator was the fear that an overwhelming victory would reinforce what the Financial Times called the AKP’s “unsettling authoritarian tendencies”. This was demonstrated when The Economist recommended that Turks voted for the opposition CHP (Republican People’s Party) to put a brake on Erdoğan’s autocratic style of government.

The reaction was not long coming. Erdoğan blasted The Economist for being part of “a global gang” which took its orders from Israel, and for good measure blasted the CHP’s leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu for also being “a project of international gangs”. The Wall Street Journal in turn accused Erdoğan of “reviving the crackpot anti-Semitic media theories of former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad”.

According to Burak Bekdil, a Turkish columnist, Turkey behaves like a nouveau riche businessman. “With a newly-gained self-confidence and the deep layers of an inferiority complex that stems from a past full of poverty and disgrace, he insults, provokes, agitates and tests the limits of his powers.”

Turkish columnist Semih Idiz recently mooted the notion that Ankara’s relations with Europe should be based more on economic self-interest than integration, and called for the establishment of a new “modus vivendi” and a new narrative between Turkey and Europe.

Now that a number of European and Turkish politicians are no longer laboring under the illusion of Turkish EU membership, this might be an opportune moment to reassess the situation.

The AKP's Underwhelming Victory: How the Election Will Change Turkish Politics

"The AKP's Underwhelming Victory: How the Election Will Change Turkish Politics
By Soner Cagaptay
ForeignAffairs.com, June 26, 2011

In this month's Turkish parliamentary elections, the governing Justice and Development Party (AKP) won almost 50 percent of the popular vote, up from 46.5 in the previous elections. The success was thanks in part to Turkey's strong performance under the conservative AKP; since 2002, Turkey's economic growth has been behind only that of China and India. Still, the AKP fell short by three seats of retaining the supermajority -- control of 330 out of 550 parliamentary seats, which gives a single party the ability to amend the constitution -- that the party has enjoyed since 2002, when it first came to power. (Although the AKP increased its vote share this year, the secular, social democratic Republican Peoples Party [CHP] and Kurdish nationalist Peace and Democracy Party [BDP] registered higher gains, therefore stealing some AKP seats.) This is a positive development for Turkey's fragile democracy, which has become dangerously polarized between the conservatives and the secular liberals. For the first time in nearly a decade, the AKP will be forced to seek consensus to govern, especially in regions where its electoral performance was weak: the country's liberal Aegean coast, Thrace, and the middle-class neighborhoods of Istanbul and other large cities. By Emine Merve Keser, JTW

First census in Republic of Turkey was conducted four year after the War of Independence which revealed that the total population of the country was 13.6 million. When peace was spread in the country following the chaotic war years, there was a high and rapid increase in total size of the population. The highest level of birth rate was %0,028 in 1950s. However now, it is %0,013 and it is expected to be %0,009 in 2023. This means that Turkey’s population has started to decrease. Similarly, fertility rate of Turkey has been declining. While fertility rate was 7 per a woman in 1930s, it is now 2, 16 which shows the bottom line for the renewal of a population."

The Byzantine church of Hagia Eirene provides an ideal setting for the Istanbul Music Festival. Rating * * * *

Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica

Presented under the banner of “Journeys to Faraway Lands”, this year’s Istanbul Music Festival puts Turkish composers and musicians into a mix featuring performers and works from around the world. Elsewhere, that might sound like a catch-all theme, yet here it makes complete sense. Taking as its starting point the Années de pèlerinage of Liszt in his bicentennial year, the entire programme flows naturally in a city that has long been at the cultural crossroads. "

Turkish - Israeli Relations - by Stephen Lendman

In May 2010, Israel's Gaza Freedom Flotilla Mavi Marmara mother ship attack, killing nine Turkish citizens, stoked tensions between the two countries.

At the time, Turkey warned it might sever diplomatic relations unless Israel apologized, consented to an independent international investigation, and ended its Gaza siege.

Israel, however, refused and stonewalled. Frayed ties followed. In fact, they began deteriorating earlier in the new millennium despite years of closer military, economic, political, technological, cultural, academic, and practical relations."

Trade talks have broken down between the European Union and Turkey in a row that could lead to the suspension of accession talks. The dispute centres on Turkey’s refusal to lift an embargo on imports from EU member Cyprus. Finland as holders of the Union’s rotating Presidency issued an ultimatum to Turkey to start accepting the goods by December 6 or face a suspension of the accession talks. Ankara has said it will not accept Cypriot goods until the European Union lifts its embargo on trade with northern Cyprus – the pro-Turkish state that’s not recognised by the international community."

MORTEN MESSERSCHMIDT - ROBERT ELLIS

The remarkable thing about the Turkish election result is not that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s Justice and Development Party, or AKP, won but the unanimity in the international press that it would not be good for Turkish democracy if they gained 330 seats or more in the Turkish parliament. In the event, half the votes only resulted in 326 seats, falling short of the 330 seats needed to change the constitution with a referendum and the 367 seats which would have made it possible for the government to change the constitution alone."

If there has been one constant in the history of both the Turkish people and their country, it has been the relentless move westwards: from the steppes of Central Asia to Anatolia, and from there to Europe. And as of June 1 - 482 years on from the Ottoman siege of Vienna and 12 years on from Turkey's recognition as a candidate for EU membership - the country has made another step to the West with the interconnection of its national power grid to that of the pan-European ENTSO-E network."

Joshua W. Walker: Turkey's New AKP Government: Will It Move Towards a Liberal or Illiberal Democracy?

"Turkey's New AKP Government: Will It Move Towards a Liberal or Illiberal Democracy?

The Turkish election results are in with few surprises but with major questions as to Turkey's political directions. The Justice and Development Party (AKP), with its conservative-Muslim roots, claims the most victory, taking over half of the votes and improving three straight elections in a row, though it will lose seats in the new parliament. The Republican People's Party (CHP), with its secular, Kemalist legacy, improved on its last showing, but gained only a quarter of the vote. The ultranationalist National Movement Party (MHP) survived last-minute scandals to enter parliament with 13% of the vote. Even the Kurdish party managed to take seats in parliament with its independent candidates garnering 6% of the votes. What do the results betoken for the self-proclaimed model democracy in the Middle East? With these election results Turkey now faces a political crossroads. The new government of the AKP can either take Turkey down the road to constitutional reform in a more liberal democratic direction or revert to some of its campaign rhetoric that promoted illiberal tendencies that will only increase Turkey's societal divisions and repress fundamental political freedoms."
