Who cares in the Middle East what Obama says? - Robert Fisk, Commentators - The Independent

"Who cares in the Middle East what Obama says?

President Obama has shown himself to be weak in his dealings with the Middle East, says Robert Fisk, and the Arab world is turning its back with contempt. Its future will be shaped without American influence

...Turkey is furious with Assad because he twice promised to speak of reform and democratic elections – and then failed to honour his word. The Turkish government has twice flown delegations to Damascus and, according to the Turks, Assad lied to the foreign minister on the second visit, baldly insisting that he would recall his brother Maher's legions from the streets of Syrian cities. He failed to do so. The torturers continue their work.

Watching the hundreds of refugees pouring from Syria across the northern border of Lebanon, the Turkish government is now so fearful of a repeat of the great mass Iraqi Kurdish refugee tide that overwhelmed their border in the aftermath of the 1991 Gulf war that it has drawn up its own secret plans to prevent the Kurds of Syria moving in their thousands into the Kurdish areas of south-eastern Turkey. Turkish generals have thus prepared an operation that would send several battalions of Turkish troops into Syria itself to carve out a "safe area" for Syrian refugees inside Assad's caliphate. The Turks are prepared to advance well beyond the Syrian border town of Al Qamishli – perhaps half way to Deir el-Zour (the old desert killing fields of the 1915 Armenian Holocaust, though speak it not) – to provide a "safe haven" for those fleeing the slaughter in Syria's cities... Istanbul - a tale of two cities

"Istanbul - a tale of two cities
Richard Godwin Richard Godwin
27 May 2011

The city walls of Constantinople were famously impenetrable. A millennium's worth of would-be invaders perished at their base until the Ottoman armies of Mehmet II breached them in 1453 and found a new name for the conquered city: Istanbul. They're still pretty treacherous. As my friend and I climbed some higgledy-piggledy steps to the top of the ruined fortification on a clear winter morning, a man with a suspicious moustache and an armful of piping called to us: 'Hayir!' That means no. He pointed out that the staircase we were climbing ended in a sheer drop: an Escher-esque optical illusion had blinded us to this abrupt fact. 'Better!' he said, gesturing towards a steeper ascent, though one that at least had the benefit of not throwing the triumphant climber to an absurd and painful death. "

Turkey's Role in Arab Spring: Can Erdogan Influence Assad? - TIME

"Why Syria and Turkey Are Suddenly Far Apart on Arab Spring Protests
By Piotr Zalewski / Istanbul Thursday, May 26, 2011

On Oct. 13, 2009, the Oncupinar border gate between Turkey and Syria played a starring role in a diplomatic photo op. Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and his Syrian counterpart, Walid al-Moualem, shook hands, smiled for the cameras and — en route to signing an agreement to end visa requirements between the two countries later that day — lifted the border barrier. The symbolism was lost on no one. Only 11 years earlier, thousands of Turkish troops had massed along the same border, awaiting orders to deploy. "

Julia | May 25th, 2011

The proposed canal has been slammed by Turkish environmentalists. But authorities at Turkey’s center for hydrogen energy technology see a silver lining: the canal could enable Turkey to become one of the world’s most important producers of hydrogen energy.

When Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced his self-termed “crazy project” last month – a new canal connecting the Black Sea and Marmara Sea, a few kilometers west of the Bosphorus Strait – most environmentalists were aghast. The project would open up hitherto undeveloped areas around Istanbul to a rash of giant new constructions, including convention centers, exhibition halls, sports facilities, housing, and Turkey’s largest airport."

"One Year After Tehran: Can Turkey still be a 'model partner' in resolving the Iran nuclear impasse?
Posted: 05/20/11 07:15 PM ET

This post was co-authored by Dr. Philipp C. Bleek

Exactly one year ago this week, Turkey and Brazil unveiled an agreement they had jointly negotiated with Iran, intended to be a significant step toward resolving the international community's concerns regarding Tehran's nuclear activities. Instead of being the diplomatic triumph Ankara and Brasilia had sought, the response in the West ranged from tepid to dismissive, and the agreement went nowhere. What went wrong, and what does it suggest about Turkey's potential future role as an intermediary on the Iran nuclear issue?"
