TURKISH TIGHTROPE

"TURKISH TIGHTROPE
Any move by Turkish troops into Kurdish territory would be a declaration of war, the region’s leader said yesterday. [snip] “If they invade or if there is any incursion, it means war,” Mr Barzani said at his offices on the outskirts of Arbil. “If they attack our people, our interests, our territories then there will be no limit because everything is subject to that incursion.” Article [Prime Minister Recep Tayyip] Erdogan said the safe haven that terrorists enjoy in northern Iraq would dominate his talks with US President George W. Bush at the White House on Nov. 5. “I will openly tell him that we expect concrete, immediate steps against the terrorists,” Erdog(an told his deputies. “The problem of the PKK terrorist organization is a test of sincerity for everybody,” he said. “I will tell him [Bush] that this test carries great importance for the region and in determining the fate of our future relations.”"

Ataturk, Peace And The Republic

"Ataturk, Peace And The Republic Published: 10/30/2007 BY DERYA SAZAK MILLIYET- Turkey celebrated the 84th anniversary of the Republic at a time when Ataturk’s saying, ‘Peace at home, peace in the world,’ is still important and a cross-border operation against northern Iraq is still being debated, because the terrorist PKK, which is trying to make the Kurdish issue into a ‘separatist’ one, started to use its weapons again. The nation’s feelings of solidarity and sadness due to victims of terrorism tinged this year’s enthusiasm for the republic. The determination, reflected in messages yesterday against the risk that the war and invasion started by the US in Iraq in 2003 would draw Turkey into the Mideast swamp due to terrorist PKK attacks, showed that everything was ventured."

Who's Behind the PKK?- by Justin Raimondo

"Who's Behind the PKK? In a word: Washington

The recent threat by the Turks to invade Iraq in hot pursuit of PKK terrorists has the administration scrambling to appease Ankara and stave off a major blow to the claim that the U.S. occupation has provided "stability" to the region. Kurdistan, after all, has been touted up until now as a model of peace, prosperity, and unalloyed happiness – a foretaste of the country's golden future, provided "defeatists" in the U.S. don't pull the rug out from under our imminent victory. To see this veritable utopia smashed by Turkish force of arms would be a disaster for Washington – but even worse would be the revelation of how we got ourselves into this wholly untenable position to begin with. Worse, that is, for whoever would be indicted and prosecuted for pulling off what may turn out to be one of the most ambitious, and dangerous, "rogue" operations since Iran-Contra."

The Reuters/Zogby poll results are not a big surprise considering Pelosi's resolution attempt with terrible timing. The approval rate for the U.S. Congress is down to 11 percent. This means only one out of ten Americans approve the 110th Congress which has been in business less than a year. This is worse than U.S approval rate in Turkey and much worse than President Bush's 24 percent approval rate. Bad presidency and terrible law-making. This is American perception of Washington. Reasons for EU to tacitly consent to Turkey' s possible move - People's Daily Online

Turkey is certainly a quite sensible word for Europeans. Its candidacy to the European Union (EU) was approved in the Helsinki Heads of State and Government Summit eight years ago, on December 10-11, 1999, but the road to its EU accession is rather tortuous and full of brambles, and no substantial progress has so far been made. Moreover, a recent boycott by the French government has made access of this nation with a population of more than 70 million to the EU more bumpy and the latter's credit has also been subjected to great challenge."

"'Genocide' talk tests Israel-Turkey ties Jewish support for Congress to call an Armenian massacre 'genocide' has strained relations between the longtime allies.

JERUSALEM - It's not that often that one finds an archbishop in long black vestments making his way down the hill from Jerusalem's Old City for a political protest at Israel's Foreign Ministry.

But for Archbishop Aris Shirvanian, these are not ordinary times, and matters of conscience are at hand. They begin with the stories that his father told him about the atrocities he witnessed as a 9-year-old, which ended in the death of his father's parents and uncles. The year was 1915, and Mr. Shirvanian's father escaped, like many others, to the Holy Land, which has a prominent Armenian community. "

The Snake Stone - Jason Goodwin - Books - Review - New York Times

"East and West Intertwine With Intrigue in Istanbul

By JANET MASLIN
Published: October 29, 2007

This spring the Mystery Writers of America gave the Edgar Award for best mystery novel to an unusual suspect: “The Janissary Tree,” by Jason Goodwin. That book was the inaugural installment in a series in which the gumshoe wears Turkish slippers. The character is Investigator Yashim, and he is a eunuch, though hardly the only eunuch in mystery fiction. There is already Mary Reed and Eric Mayer’s “John the Eunuch” series that is set in the plague-ridden sixth century and features “This man isn’t here to help you burst pustules” (from “Five for Silver”) as a representative line."

A suggestion to Turkey for 'genocide' bill: Do nothing! - Turkish Daily News Oct 29, 2007

"A suggestion to Turkey for 'genocide' bill: Do nothing! Monday, October 29, 2007

Bryce KAUFMAN

As an American exchange student in Turkey, I am more than keenly aware of the effect that U.S. policies have on U.S.-Turkish relations and on the way in which Americans are perceived here. Obviously the topic on everybody's minds recently has been the U.S House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee's passage of a non-binding resolution recognizing the events of 1915 as genocide.I suppose I echo U.S. Ambassador Ross Wilson's words when I say that I can understand why the Turkish public is dismayed and angry with the resolution. Passing such a measure is not the way in which friends and allies treat each other, revealing a certain lack of understanding on the part of U.S. politicians who supported the measure on how truly important Turkey is for U.S. interests abroad. Most notably, as has been repeatedly quoted in U.S. articles and news reports, a large proportion of U.S. supplies to U.S. service members in Iraq flows through Turkey, specifically through the Incirlik airbase. One of the first things I noticed in Istanbul was that in some quarters (for instance in Nişantaşı posh residential and shopping district) there were no trash bins in the streets. Later I learnt that terrorists many times successfully used trash bins as detonation facilities targeting civilians in crowded streets. It was during the pre-suicide bombers epoch and removing trash bins was a security measure against terrorism. "

Turkish troops already inside Iraq - Telegraph

"Turkish troops already inside Iraq
By Tim Butcher in Hurmadada Last Updated: 12:11am BST 27/10/2007 World leaders may have spent all week urging restraint — but the reality is that Turkish troops are already well inside Iraq. The Daily Telegraph yesterday witnessed Turkey's military presence, including tanks, 12 miles inside Kurdish northern Iraq. The patrol, however, was not the advanced guard of an invasion. The Turkish army has been deployed here for more than 10 years, manning four large bases built on hilltops with commanding views."

"Turkey indicates cross-border offensive unlikely before PM visit to Washington

ISTANBUL, Turkey: Turkey will wait until the prime minister visits Washington in early November before deciding on a cross-border offensive into northern Iraq, the country's military chief has said. Turkey's civilian leadership said it was dissatisfied with proposals from U.S.-backed Iraq for dealing with Kurdish rebels sheltering there.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he will travel on Nov. 5 to Washington to meet U.S. President George W. Bush in what is widely seen as the culmination of frantic diplomatic activity aimed at averting a Turkish incursion in northern Iraq."

Delay requested in House 'genocide' vote - CNN.com

"WASHINGTON (AP) -- House sponsors of a resolution that would label as genocide the 1915 killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks have asked Speaker Nancy Pelosi to delay a vote on the measure because they feared it would fail.

Support for the resolution deteriorated this month, after Turkey recalled its U.S. ambassador in protest and several lawmakers said they feared it would cripple U.S.-Turkey relations.

"We believe that a large majority of our colleagues want to support a resolution recognizing the genocide on the House floor and they will do so, provided the timing is more favorable," the lawmakers told Pelosi in a letter on Wednesday."

Turkish Options

"As the Turkish-Iraqi tensions rise and small scale cross border operations begin, let’s examine Turkey’s situation and options at the moment. First of all, much fuss was made about the recent weak agreement between Iraq and Turkey which did not include an allowance for Turkish troops to cross into Iraq in so-called “hot pursuit” operations against the PKK. Indeed, Turkey has gone to great lengths to secure some kind of international understanding for intended operations. Behind the rhetoric and seeming belligerence, lies the fear of the government that this could further isolate Turkey from the EU and US and that it may one day have to recognize the PKK or autonomous Kurds in Iraqi Kurdistan in some form of official negotiations or through official agreements. While fully in its rights to engage in military operations in Iraq, it nevertheless is seeking some kind of official blessing."

Turkish threats to invade northern Iraq are nothing new. The last threat of attacks was in July, when Turkey amassed 140,000 troops along the border with Iraq. The Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), a Turkish Kurd separatist movement designated by the United States as a terrorist organization, stopped their cross-border operations from Iraq into Turkey, successfully warding off that attack. But in recent weeks, the PKK has restarted attacks into Turkish territory; last week alone PKK fighters killed a dozen Turkish soldiers and took eight more as captives. "

Congress Iffy on Genocide Vote

"Congress Iffy on Genocide Vote

Just two weeks ago, the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee voted out a resolution declaring the massacre of 1.5 million Armenians from 1915-1917 in the Turkish Ottoman Empire to be a 'genocide.' The resolution has been long sought by the Armenian-American community to officially express horror at one of the early 20th century's most notorious examples of the mass murder of an entire population. The Armenian massacre, which has been fully and amply documented, provided a horrific precedent for later humanitarian calamities, including the Holocuast and the infamous 'ethnic cleansing' in the former Yugoslavia, Bosnia and Kosovo, among others."

From the Bosporus to the Himalayas: What a Mess::By Tony Blankley

"From the Bosporus to the Himalayas: What a Mess By Tony Blankley Wednesday, October 24, 2007

With the steady decline of our selected ally Gen. Pervez Musharraf's ability to govern Pakistan and the growing alienation of the Turkish people and government from their longtime ally the United States, it is fair to say that from the Bosporus to the Himalayas, American interests continue to decline, while American policy drifts. It is ironic, if not mordant, to observe that in that zone, our policy in Iraq stands out as holding more promise for success than most of the other policies we are attempting. This week, let me consider why we are losing Turkey."

The United States and the European Union continue to press Turkey for restraint in the face of a bloody new attack by guerrillas operating from sanctuaries in northern Iraq. Easy for them to say. In the past three weeks, Kurdish Workers Party separatists have killed scores of Turkish soldiers and civilians on Turkish soil. Ultimately, Turkey should not be held to a standard that the United States or European powers would never adhere to. Turkey is a long-standing friend and ally of the West. It should not have to respond alone."

By Special to the Times-Union
The hypocrisy surrounding the resolution to declare the Armenian massacre an act of genocide is another attempt at fishing for votes.

There is much literature on this tragic event, characterized by acrimony and prejudice, wherein both sides offer oversimplified historical perspectives. The story has been reduced to a partisan plea for special treatment. The killings were being done on both sides."
