The United States and the European Union continue to press Turkey for restraint in the face of a bloody new attack by guerrillas operating from sanctuaries in northern Iraq. Easy for them to say. In the past three weeks, Kurdish Workers Party separatists have killed scores of Turkish soldiers and civilians on Turkish soil. Ultimately, Turkey should not be held to a standard that the United States or European powers would never adhere to. Turkey is a long-standing friend and ally of the West. It should not have to respond alone."
