Turkish economist No. 1

"Turkish economist No. 1

Things come in and go out of vogue. Suddenly, it's all Canadian singers, Irish actors and French singers. No one knows exactly why the Australians, Scots and Italians are out, but that's the way it goes. Similarly with economists. Turkish is the new flavour. And, funnily enough, they're gaining fame in the USA, where they tend to lecture at the best universities and, this is worth noting, tend to be highly critical of the very free enterprise system that assures them freedom from want and fear. But that's economists. They're a dismal, capricious lot."

By Gareth Jenkins

Tuesday, September 30, 2008

In a country in which the prevailing, and often paradoxical, interpretation of secularism frequently causes political and economic instability (see EDM, July 31), it is ironic that one of the Turkish state’s unequivocal concessions to religious sentiments has provided the Turkish markets with at least a temporary shield against the global turmoil that has followed the rejection by Congress on September 29 of a $700 billion bailout package for the troubled U.S. financial sector."

Turkey and the European Union

"Turkey and the European Union

Relations between Turkey and the European Union were suspended for most of the 1970s and 1980s for several reasons: the military coup of 1971, the Cyprus intervention of 1974 and the military coup of 1980, which closed down political parties and trade unions and imprisoned many people on political grounds. Eventually, the EU summit held in Helsinki in December 1999 made a historic decision. Turkey was officially designated “a candidate country destined to join the union on the basis of the same criteria applied to the other candidate countries”."

Whenever I go to Turkey, I feel as if I am going back home to Lebanon. The Turks are as hospitable as the Lebanese and for every Lebanese dish, or almost every one, there is a Turkish equivalent, albeit prepared quite differently.

This summer, I was invited to a food festival in Safranbolu, a delightful Unesco World Heritage town in the Black Sea region. It was an amazing three-day eating extravaganza of delicious regional dishes. But what really struck me during the festival was that we were not served a single salad until our last dinner."

The sight of armed soldiers walking towards you in a forthright manner can be somewhat unnerving, especially if they've seen you doing something you really shouldn't be doing. As I read your column dated Sept. 12 bearing the title “Doğan-Erdoğan: What will happen in the end?” I came across many factual errors which have to be corrected.

However, before proceeding with my words, I would like to touch upon your sentences at the beginning of your article: “The person who knows someone the best is himself. If your conscience approves what you have done, then it's all right. But it can't …" Personally I do not think it is right to express opinions on the conscience of others. I am completely comfortable with my own. "

U.S.A.K. Blog: Drug Smuggling As Main Source of PKK Terrorism

"Drug Smuggling As Main Source of PKK Terrorism

Some claim that Turkey is one of the transit countries of the drug trafficking, not a consumer; so the fight against narcotic should not be involved with in the priority struggels of Turkey. Even, within some conversations, it is possible to hear that narcotic money has an additional value for Turkey. Data on drug usage verifies the fact that Turkey is not a crucial drug consumption market, it is mostly a transit country. Due to drug smuggling, billions of dollar have entered to the country. However, these are not the whole part of the schema. To clarify Turkey just as a “transit country” is not sufficient. In the mean time, Turkey has become one of the crucial narcotic centers of the world. Every drug bags, pass through Istanbul and other Turkish cities to the Western Europe this turns back as a terror, crime organization, violence on the street and loss of government power in Turkey. Besides, this process continues for decades; drug-violence-degeneration triangle insidiously prejudice Turkey internally. At that point, drug trucks, passes from Turkey, should be stopped so as to re-construct order in Turkey, re-gain government authority by the government itself."

The truth is something that has always been difficult to judge, and when there are emotions, beliefs, and assumptions mixed into the equation it becomes almost impossible to judge as is the case with determining whether the Armenian Genocide allegation has any merit. One obstacle we face all the time, is whether you meet someone who strongly believes in the Armenian Genocide or who strongly disagrees with it, they both tell you 'you can't deny the facts, this is the truth.' So how do you determine which side is right? How do you know whether there is a conspiracy to create a genocide to promote hatred and lawsuits, or a conspiracy to exterminate a people?"

Turkey was among the first countries to recognize the Central Asian republics immediately upon their independence in the early 1990s. Let Cypriots solve Cyprus, Greek Cypriot tells

"Let Cypriots solve Cyprus, Greek Cypriot tells U.N.

September 25, 2008 - By Claudia Parsons (Reuters)

Cypriot President Demetris Christofias urged the United Nations on Wednesday not to try to impose a solution on the island, which has been divided between Greek and Turkish Cypriots since 1974.
Numerous U.N.-led efforts to reunite Cyprus have failed, most recently in 2004, when Greek Cypriots rejected a plan prepared under the aegis of previous Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Christofias, the Greek Cypriot leader, and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat started a new round of reunification talks this month.
Speaking to the U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday, Christofias said Cypriots must be in charge of the process."

Actual art at the 'Orienting Istanbul' conference includes video works by Hou Hanru
BY ARI MESSER
Tuesday September 23, 2008

REVIEW When veteran Istanbulite Orhan Pamuk received the Nobel Prize in literature two years ago, the committee complimented his 'quest for the melancholic soul of his native city.' Melancholic? The world's third largest city has one big, melancholic soul? I think Pamuk, of all people, would disagree. The 10th International Istanbul Biennial, which was curated by über-busy San Francisco Art Institute faculty member Hou Hanru in 2007, took a more caustic if not realistic theme: 'Not Only Possible, But Also Necessary: Optimism in the Age of Global War.' The organizers of the 'Orienting Istanbul' conference at Berkeley this week have produced a truly interdisciplinary (and free to the public) conference that cuts through the jargon and confronts big ideas head-on. Nonetheless, I'm glad they snuck in some actual art, including 'Istanbul-Berkeley,' Hanru's selection of video works from the biennial."

Mika Waltari: from Helsinki to Istanbul ~ Cafebabel

"Mika Waltari: from Helsinki to Istanbul

Mika Waltari’s Yksinäisen miehen juna (‘The Lonely Man’s Train’, 1929) takes us on a trip from Helsinki to Istanbul, through a Europe taking a breath between world wars and still balancing on the edge of the old and the new. The travel book turns eighty next year, but Waltari’s way of seeing our part of the world and its people seems timeless. In ‘searching for our time’, the protagonist is primarily searching for himself and confronting adulthood. The train’s movement is unstoppable, making its way toward a new, modern unknown. The individual considers directions and put together timetables and routes. In the end, the decision is simply a question of whether or not to stay on board."

EBRD Board recommends Bank invest in Turkey [EBRD - Press Release]

"EBRD Board recommends Bank invest in Turkey

The EBRD’s Board of Directors decided today that Turkey should become a recipient of EBRD investments, pending final confirmation by the Bank’s Board of Governors.

Turkey has been a shareholder of the EBRD since the Bank was founded in 1991 and made a request in April this year for a change in its EBRD status to become a Country of Operations.

Its application said the EBRD could contribute to the development of entrepreneurial and open-market initiatives in a wide range of sectors across Turkey and such a change would be “immensely beneficial for the Bank as well as for Turkey”."
