WASHINGTON - Turkish Daily News
Senior U.S. diplomat James Jeffrey, President Bush's pick for ambassador to Ankara, sought confirmation Wednesday as he faced pressure from a pro-Armenian senator about the killings of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire.Sen. Robert Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey with a seat on the Senate's Foreign Relations Committee, asked Jeffrey if the United States should recognize the World War I-era killings as genocide, "if Turkey on its own came to an evolution and said there was a genocide." In reply, Jeffrey said Washington would have to review all aspects of the issue and that there might be other factors "such as our general approach to other conflicts.""
