The European Union deserves praise for launching its long expected, but highly controversial, talks on accepting Turkey for membership. The eventual integration of the Muslim nation into the European political framework will take years to accomplish, and still faces major hurdles. But the prospect of membership should encourage positive trends toward democracy in Turkey. And that will strengthen forces for democracy in the wider Middle East."
