THE OMERIYE Ottoman baths in Nicosia have been awarded top prize in a European cultural competition.
The annual European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards ceremony in Madrid gave the baths first place in the ‘Conservation of Architectural Heritage’ category, along with a monetary award of 10,000 euros.
The award recognises “the safeguarding of the authenticity and adaptation to contemporary needs of a distinctive landmark of the walled city of Nicosia and the sensitive treatment of an Islamic architectural element in a multicultural context,” according to the jury."
