"Turks Want to Elect President Themselves
June 25, 2006
(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Many adults in Turkey think their head of state should be chosen through the ballot box, according to a poll by Vatan. 76 per cent of respondents believe the president should be elected by the people and not by the Great National Assembly.
In the November 2002 ballot, the Justice and Development Party (AKP) elected 363 lawmakers to the 550-seat legislative branch. Recep Tayyip Erdogan has served as prime minister since March 2003. The next legislative election will take place in November 2007."
