“Ending the military tutelage” has been named as the top success of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) during its 11-year rule.
People from a wide political range, including socialists and liberals, voted in favor of a 2010 referendum that paved the way to put the architects of the Sept. 12, 1980 military coup on trial. In addition, the architects of the Feb. 28, 1997 coup -- which has been dubbed a “postmodern coup” because no murders occurred -- were brought to court along with those who attempted to oust the government through coup plots under the names “Ergenekon” and “Balyoz (Sledgehammer).”
