The Australian Government will fund two engineering and archaeological studies to safeguard the preservation of the Gallipoli site where Australian soldiers fought 90 years ago, Prime Minister John Howard said yesterday.
But Mr Howard, who spoke after meeting the Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Erdogan, said the listing of the site on the Australian heritage register would not occur because Turkey had expressed concern that this would infringe on their natural sovereignty. Mr Howard had previously suggested the listing of the site, but he said he had done so subject to discussions with the Turkish Government."
