‘It is not easy to become a friend with a big power but you cannot remain friends if that big power puts you into difficult situations. I am aware that hostility with big powers is not the right policy but sometimes there may be situations that is simply unavoidable’ ‘A united Cyprus is not possible. If it were possible for the two Cypriot peoples to live together, the bloody clashes before and after 1960 would not have happened on the island. This is not a “majority” and “minority” issue; there are two nations on the island with sovereign rights and what should be done is to acknowledge this fact’ ‘Turkey, which lost 40,000 people to terrorism and complains about the support the world gives to terrorism, has made a very big mistake by inviting a group which is still designated a terrorist group’ "
