"EU assists Turkey on combating avian influenza
Over the past 2 months in Turkey 4 children have died and 21 people have become ill from what has been confirmed to be the Asian strain of the avian influenza virus. All cases resulted from direct contact between humans and infected birds. The Turkish authorities have also been battling against the spread of the virus in poultry and wild birds across the country, but despite their best efforts, the disease has still not been brought under control.
To support Turkey in its battle to fight the virus the EU Commission adopted an urgent Commission Decision on 17th February 2006 which will see the start of the “Avian Influenza Preparedness and Response Project”. "
