The visit of a German chancellor to Ankara is always an important event. So when Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder visits Turkey it is more than a special event. Germany is not only an old ally of Turkey dating way back to World War I, but also a major trade partner and a leading Western country that hosts millions of Turks.
It's true that in relative terms Turkey is lagging behind in foreign investment. But despite this sorrowful state Germany is still one of the leading countries whose investors have shown interest in Turkey .
Aside from this fact, Germany is a key European Union member whose blessing is needed if Turkey is to make any meaningful headway in its full membership process into the EU. "
