Connecting Turkish Women
Worldwide Citizen of the Day column by Miki Cumming

Sema Karaoglu of San Clemente founded the 'Daughters of Ataturk' to provide a network for professional Turkish women around the globe. The organization is named for Kemal Ataturk.

In 1999, Sema Karaoglu founded an organization called 'Daughters of Ataturk,' designed to bring together women of Turkish birth and/or descent who now live in the United States and other parts of the world. Turkey's history, though not very well known, is one of fascination. Sema's background is Turkish, but she was born on the island of Cyprus (south of Turkey) which, at the time was part of the British Empire. She had some schooling in Turkey, but not much - instead, she went to elementary school and college here in Southern California. She had an aunt who lived here, which was one of the reasons the family chose to move here."

EUbusiness - Turkish PM accuses media over controversial demo clampdown

"Turkish PM accuses media over controversial demo clampdownDocument Actions 10/03/2005

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan blamed the country's media for their reporting on a heavy-handed police clampdown against a women's demonstration which caused tension with the European Union, the Anatolia news agency reported Thursday. 'All television channels heaped criticism on the police. Our media basically denounced Turkey to Europe and the world,' Erdogan said in an interview late Wednesday with the private TGRT television channel. 'Was that really Turkey? What happened there? We need to consider these questions, but no one seems to do that,' he added. "

"Across Europe, politicians play immigration card to woo voters

LONDON (AP) - Immigrants to Britain may soon have to do more than just fill out forms. They might have to know where Cockneys live, how many British households have pets, and what goes into a traditional Christmas dinner.
Such topics could form part of 'a Britishness test'' the government is proposing as it heads into a general election facing rising voter anxiety over the notion that the country is doing too little to control the flow of immigrants or assimilate those who manage to get in. "

YUSUF KANLI
The main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) coming together Tuesday and agreeing on the need for a very carefully written program countering Armenian claims of genocide was a landmark development that we hope represents a change in Turkey's way of dealing with controversial issues.

Issuing proclamations of rejection and protesting other governments and parliaments' adoption of political decisions supporting the Armenian charges has served no purpose over the years. The persistent hesitation of Turkish official and non-official groups to discuss the issue with the Armenians and other nationals has not succeeded in winning support for calls by Ankara to refer the issue to the historians.

Officials in Ankara may be angry with Hansjorg Kretschmer, the EU's outspoken representative here. But Ambassador Kretschmer doesn't act in a void. He reflects the mood in EU capitals. The feedback that Ankara got from Monday's Troika meeting should have made this patently clear. The shocking display of police brutality against women in Istanbul over the weekend, on the other hand, showed that Ambassador Kretschmer has a point.

Well, in official language, the U.S. decision to redirect a $1 billion grant allocated to Turkey is a clear indicator of the development the Turkish economy has shown in recent years. That's for public consumption at a sensitive time between former strategic partners Ankara and Washington. In practical language, however, the government and opposition benches in the Turkish Parliament altogether owe their electorate a net $1 billion."

Washington Institute: Changing Turkish Public Attitudes toward the United States: Premises and Prospects

"Changing Turkish Public Attitudes toward the United States: Premises and Prospects

By Soner Cagaptay
March 7, 2005

American and Turkish media have been awash recently with news of increased Turkish resentment toward the United States. Media coverage has focused on negative portrayals of U.S. foreign policy in Turkey, including recent opinion polls such as a January 19 BBC survey, according to which 82 percent of Turks oppose the Bush administration. It may indeed be the case that Turks have become more critical of U.S. foreign policy. Moreover, such sentiments, previously limited to a fringe Islamist constituency, now seem pervasive across the political landscape, uniting Islamists, nationalists, and even secular liberals (see Soner Cagaptay, Where Goes the U.S.-Turkish Relationship, Middle East Quarterly, fall 2004). How concerned should Washington be? What can the Bush administration and the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government in Turkey do to address this issue? "

This was a result of the empire’s decision to enter World War I on the same side as Germany. France and Britain incited the Armenian revolt against the Ottoman Empire in order to gain a strong hand in the Dardanelles and the empire’s southern and eastern flanks. 8 March 2005 -- Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan called today for an impartial historical study of Armenian claims of genocide by Ottoman Turkish troops nearly a century ago.

Erdogan told journalists in Ankara that Turkey has opened its archives to those who claim there was genocide. They in turn should open their archives, he said.

Teams of historians from both sides should then conduct studies in these records, he said.

Armenia says some 1.5 million ethnic Armenians died between 1915 and 1923 on Ottoman territory in a systematic genocide. Turkey denies any genocide, saying the Armenians were victims of a partisan war which also claimed many Turkish lives. "

Actually such things are considered common functions of the government in most countries.
Sundays Washington Post published a list of mass murder of civilians in acts of genocide. Near the top of this list was the Holocaust. According to the list, seven million people had been murdered in Ukraine by the former Russian leader Joseph Stalin in 1932-33, the Japanese killed 300,000 Chinese in the Nanjing massacre, six million Jews had been murdered in Nazi Germany between 1938-1945, two million people under the Pol Pot regime had been killed in Kampuchea in 1975-79, 200,000 people in Bosnia between 1992 and 1995, and 800,000 people in Rwanda in 1994 had been murdered. Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am very pleased to meet you here in Istanbul during my first official visit to Turkey as the Commissioner for Enlargement.
Istanbul has a particularly significant standing in the history of the civilised world, which is well alive and flourishing in the present day too, as a great political, intellectual and artistic centre. Few cities in Europe reflect so many centuries of shared history and identity. The shores of the Bosphorus inspired my countryman, Mika Waltari, to produce some of the most elegant and enjoyable pages of modern Finnish and, I should say, European literature. No wonder they have also inspired Orhan Pamuk, the local Nobelist-in-waiting, to write his realist and/or surrealist X-rays of contemporary Turkey and old and new Istanbul. His latest novel Snow has actually encouraged me to pay a visit to the city of Kars next time I com"

Turkey's government was accused yesterday of misleading the European Union about progress made in resettling nearly 400,000 people displaced by the civil war between the army and Kurdish separatists in the 1980s and 1990s, writes Vincent Boland in Ankara. Human Rights Watch alleged the government had exaggerated the number of people returning to their villages and farms in the south-east of the country last year, just as EU political leaders were deciding whether to invite Turkey to join the EU. The organisation said the government's claim that a third of the estimated 378,000 mainly Kurdish refugees were being helped to return home was 'unreliable'. It said its own investigation showed that, in some places, the number was less than a fifth of the official estimates. "

"Limits of regional politics in the Middle East
The regional countries face the reality that regional politics is no longer independent from the realities of world politics of the 9/11 era. The relations between Turkey, Syria, and Iran are exemplary in this sense.
By Dr Bulent Aras for PINR (07/03/05)

The geography of the Middle East is subject to direct international interference through the interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq and through political attempts to transform the region socially, politically, and economically. Calls for reform and renovation have reached a heightened level, and Western states are pushing for the development of good governance, democracy, and human rights in Middle Eastern societies. Turkey, Syria, and Iran are influential actors in Middle Eastern politics. The relations and the cooperation between these states occur at a time when Syria and Iran have been accused by the Bush administration of being antagonists to a peaceful and democratic international system. The ongoing relations between these states, and how these states interact with the international community, is revealing since they are important components of the regional power balance."

HARDLY any former pupil of the English School, or many others, would not look back on his or her school years and shed a fond smile. Since 1900, the English School has carved its mark on the history of the island and has nurtured most of the top brass in the professional spheres of Cyprus.

The head of the English School Parents Association, Magda Nicholson, herself a pupil at the school from 1966 to 1973, says that the school has forever been placed in her heart.
The English School has had a wonderful effect on my life and a big part of my soul and with an independent view I can honestly say that as a teenager it was a unique experience. There was no other school at that time which offered that type of education and we were, as we are also now, one step ahead of every other school.

Turkish Cypriot journalist Metin Munir also has fond memories of the school, saying that the English School, of which he was a pupil from 1955 to 1961, was the best experience of his life."

Accussed of being both a Brit basher and schmoozing up to the government, MARTIN PACKARD attempts to put the record straight

First, honoured as I am to be referred to as a 'spook', I have never in fact been a spy or an 'intelligence agent'. While serving as a Royal Navy officer, I did have a three-year stint as intelligence adviser to NATO's Comedsoueast and to the UK's C-in-C Mediterranean, but I was acting simply as an analyst and the job didn't make me a member of the professional intelligence community. What it did do was give me access to diplomatic and intelligence reporting from throughout the Eastern Mediterranean, much of which I found to be either biased or inaccurate when it referred to areas of which I had personal knowledge.

Nor have I ever worked for the British Foreign Office, which will have been a matter of relief to that establishment.
I was sent by the Navy to Cyprus on January 6, 1964, solely because General Peter Young, who had just taken command of Joint Force (the original peacekeeping operation), had asked for the secondment of officers qualified as Greek-language interpreters, of whom I was one."

Every analysis on Turkey needs to pay a special attention to the trajectory of modernization in Turkish cultural and political history.
For quite some time in university circles, the notion of modernization was employed as a universal and fundamental stage, which all societies had to undergo at one time or another along their particular history. Only recently has this sweeping approach been replaced by a more diversified understanding, which gives room to cultural and historical variation, and acknowledges the existence of perhaps several modernizations rather than modernization as one single formula. The school, which opened its doors last September, has only 10 students, aged 12 to 15, but 15 teachers to cover the full range of subjects. A Greek-language elementary school nearby also has 10 pupils and two teachers. "

IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS THAT REFUTE THE AAG: 16

Dear Readers,

If you think you have seen and heard all, think again!

Fasten your seat belts for what follows below, as it will be revealed here for the first time, quite possibly in the whole world, since the original piece was published in 1917, and almost certainly will blow the AFATH lobby away once and for all!

The entire credit for this incredible piece of research goes to my good friend Dr. Erdal Atrek, a Turkish-American scholar. My hat is off to this gentleman. I am proud to know Dr. Atrek from my high school years in the late 1960s at the Robert Academy of Istanbul, Turkey, and lucky to have caught up with him again many years later in America. "

Nick gives Istanbul another try - and is won over by the kindness of strangers. But, flying home, it's Eindhoven that catches his eye

Thursday March 3, 2005

Last week's account of an unfortunate scam and an eventful night in an Istanbul police station sparked immense outrage among the Turkish media. Public interest on this scale is something I simply hadn't prepared for, so it's important to bring my reports back to some kind of reality. "

Turkish Daily News - Gunduz Aktan: Germany's responsibility

"Gunduz Aktan: Germany's responsibility
Saturday, March 5, 2005

Gunduz Aktan
On Feb. 23, five deputies of the German opposition parties CDU/CSU submitted a motion to the Bundestag for the commemoration of the 90th anniversary of the Armenian exile and massacre. Thus, after France, Germany too is taking a stance in favor of Armenian demands over the genocide issue. Since the German government supports our European Union membership bid, this unpleasant task falls on the opposition. Meanwhile, certain foundations that are in the habit of working against Turkey too have reportedly received instructions to stage meetings and to issue publications on this matter. For this reason, the Turks in Germany feel uneasy. "

Turkish Daily News - Turkey: A Euro-tiger?

"Turkey: A Euro-tiger?
Saturday, March 5, 2005

TDN Editorial by Yusuf KANLI

YUSUF KANLI
Turkey was a country dragging its feet on every issue, citing sensitivities and special conditions of the country as excuses for not abiding by conditions -- or to put it more kindly, recommendations -- of the European Union.
Human rights: Yes, but Individual liberties: Yes, but Freedom of expression and speech: Yes, but Kurdish language: Yes, but Prison reform: Yes, but Reform of trial procedures: Yes, but Cyprus: Can't be considered in connection with Turkey's European Union process The problem was resolved, anyhow, back in 1974 "

Iraqi Kurds demand wider autonomy in northern Iraq and retaining peshmerga forces for cooperation in the establishment of a government

ANKARA Turkish Daily News

A top Turkish official complained yesterday that Iraq's Turkmen community, who share close ethnic ties with Turks, was not sufficiently willing to participate in the country's first post-war elections. Iraqi Kurds, whose political aspirations have been viewed with suspicion by Turkey, insisted on wider autonomy in the north of Iraq and retaining their peshmerga forces for cooperation with other Iraqi parties in the search for a government."
