By Erik D'Amato

In the run-up to Hungary's EU presidency earlier this month, I noticed a piece in the English-language version of leading Turkish dailyHürriyet that I thought was just a little odd. Entitled 'Turkey's hopes run high for Hungary's EU term presidency', it detailed how Ankara expects Budapest to push harder to move along Turkey's EU accession application that Belgium, from which Hungary took over the rotating presidency."

Controversial Turkish television

Jan 27th 2011 | ISTANBUL

SULTAN Suleiman the Magnificent, who earned his moniker for taking the Ottoman empire to the apogee of its glory in the mid-16th century, is widely regarded as sacred in Turkey. No matter that he had his own son murdered, among several dastardly deeds. Modern Turks like to boast of his armies reaching the gates of Vienna and to refer to him as the “lawgiver”. A British historian, Jason Goodwin, writes that Suleiman was “majestic enough to stock his court with an unusual number of buffoons, dwarves, mutes, astrologers, and silent janissaries” and that he ruled so long “that he became something of an Ottoman Queen Victoria.”"

Holidays in Turkey - The Success Story Continues

"Holidays in Turkey - The Success Story Continues

By : Jimi St Pierre

The Turkish Tourism and Culture Office (TCCO) reports continued success for the country in attracting visitors. For 2010, the TCCO reveals that over 28 million visits were made to the Turkey by international tourists, with 2.7million of these arriving from the UK - a 10% increase on the 2009 figure.

Part of this success can be attributed to the fact that Istanbul was the European Capital of Culture, thus ensuring a fillip of interest in the attractions of this unique city straddling the continents of Europe and Asia. However, it is also likely that the strength of the Euro (since diminished) in most of 2010 meant that UK visitors in particular were looking for holidays outside the Eurozone. Turkey was an obvious choice."

The Lack of Policy Entrepreneurship in Turkey-EU Relations

"The Lack of Policy Entrepreneurship in Turkey-EU Relations
Mustafa Kutlay
Researcher, USAK

Monday, 31 January 2011

After experiencing a ‘golden age’ between 1999 and 2005, Turkey-EU relations plunged into deadlock in the post-2005 period. Many domestic and international factors contributed to the worsening of bilateral relations. On the European side, the failure of Constitutional reform, the problems emerged from the 2004 enlargement and the global financial crisis’ impact on Eurozone occupied the central agenda. On the Turkish side, the political turmoil in the pre and post 2007 general elections, the antagonizing Presidential elections and the ubiquitous Cyprus question automatically downgraded the importance of the EU in the eyes of Turkish policy-makers. Turkey’s changing foreign policy priorities, both as a reason and result of the tightening relations with the EU, also transformed the dynamics of Turkey-EU relations."

Posted on 30 January 2011.

New authors and intellectuals have only now begus to challenge the versions of history that were doled out by the colonial powers. Millions of pages of Muslim history are still stored in Topkapi and other vaults of knowledge. Thousands of historical secrets about science and technology remain locked up in ancient libraries and museums. all over the Arab world. Israeli universities horde up many of the Naag Hamdi texts, and the Red Sea scrolls, many of which have ended up in Dead Sea Scrolls. When Bernard Lewis was given access to the Turkish warehouses where ancient books are gathering dust, he was really impressed by the amount of knowledge that has been ignored over the centuries."

Bulgur is a main ingredient in Turkish cuisine. If you have ever eaten a typical homemade dish, rest assured, it was probably made with bulgur. Bulgur is defined as being in the wheat family. It is a form of wheat that has been boiled for a short time, then broken up and then dried. After eating so many rice dishes, it is a nice change when using bulgur to your meal. Bulgur is found in many Indian or Turkish markets in the local New York City area. One market in particular is the Turkiyem Market in Sunnyside, Queens. Among many other wonderous grains to be bought there, bulgur is one that is used for many dishes. Having never used bulgur in past meals, the trip to this market turned out to be a successful one. Not only was there bulgur in this great market, but also a variety of cheeses, breads and olives as well."

"Turkish Central Bank Expects Higher Annual Inflation, Monetary Tightening
By Ali Berat Meric and Steve Bryant - Jan 25, 2011 2:54 PM GMT+0200

The central bank raised its forecast for consumer price inflation to 5.9 percent from 5.4 percent, governor Durmus Yilmaz said at a news conference in Ankara today. The 5.1 percent forecast for 2012 was left unchanged, he said. Inflation slowed to 6.4 percent last month, the lowest for a year.

The central bank says it’s tightening monetary policy on aggregate by increasing reserve requirements on banks to restrain lending. That offsets interest rate cuts in the past two months that have taken the benchmark to a record low of 6.25 percent, helping deter capital inflows and weaken the lira."

The Turkel Commission Report and Initial Reactions[1]

On January 23 the Turkel Commission issued the first part of its report. The commission investigated the issue of the Israeli takeover of the flotilla, during which IDF forces were attacked by operatives belonging to the Turkish IHH. The commission considered the blockade of the Gaza Strip and determined that it was in accordance the rules of international law. With all issues relating to the flotilla the commission determined that the takeover of the ship was carried out in accordance with international law. That was because if the vessel’s intention was to violate the naval blockade of the Gaza Strip, it was permissible to take control of it even if it were in international waters. The commission determined that the IDF had not taken into consideration a scenario of an organized force armed with deadly weapons which would actively oppose an attempt to board the ship."

'When We Leave': A Muslim wife breaks away

"'When We Leave': A Muslim wife breaks away
In the gripping melodrama 'When We Leave,' a Turkish-German woman straddles tradition and modernity
By Andrew O'Hehir

Sibel Kekilli in 'When We Leave'

'When We Leave' begins with a scene that suggests shocking violence and ends by delivering that same scene in full (which turns out to be even worse than we thought at first). At least you won't think you're heading for an up-with-people, feel-good experience. A gripping tragic melodrama about a young Turkish-German woman torn between the modern, secular society around her and the demands of her traditional Islamic family, writer-director Feo Aladag's debut film goes straight at the most contentious issue plaguing contemporary Europe. Aladag is an Austrian of European heritage, but her outstanding Turkish cast portrays the conflict that erupts around Umay (Sibel Kekilli), a beautiful young woman who defies tradition by leaving her abusive husband, with remarkable sensitivity."

Sibel Kekilli and Florian Lukas in 'When We Leave'
When We Leave, Germany’s bid for an Oscar nomination, is a stunning first effort from Feo Aladag, who wore three hats as the film’s debuting writer/director/producer. The ripped-from-the-headlines drama is already one of the most honored German films of the decade. (It was back in 2006 when that country’s The Lives of Others stole as much thunder and garnered as many awards, including the year’s Oscar for Best Foreign-Language film.)"

The first minarets emerged from the blue haze, exclamation points above a busy skyline. As the ship drew closer, passengers poured onto the bow and decks to view the unfolding panorama of domes and spires, bridges and fortifications.

Pulling into port in Istanbul ranks as a highlight of a cruise in the Eastern Mediterranean. On the port side, the domes of the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia rise above the walls of Topkapi Palace. On the starboard, a suspension bridge spans the Bosporus and links the continents of Europe and Asia in Turkey's largest city."
