According to the Turkish media, the Turkish Patent Institute being well aware that Armenians have claims on Ararat Mountain and the territories adjacent to it rejected the Armenian company on the basis of variance of the patent request with the state order. Turkey is afraid that the consumers of the commodities called Ararat will think that Ararat Mountain is located in Armenia. Since Turkey reached an agreement with the IMF about the new stand-by, it is confirmed that, freeing the first chunk of the $10 billion of credit will relieve the Turkish Treasury because Turkey has a $2 billion return payment for the IMF in May. Experts from Glasgow University are helping Turkey in a new drive to stamp out 'honour killings' - where women and young girls are murdered by their relatives for allegedly bringing shame on the family.
Human rights activists estimate that hundreds of Turkish women are murdered in honour killings each year. Behaviour regarded as 'dishonourable' can include being a rape victim or resisting an arranged marriage. In one recent case, a girl was thrown off a rooftop by her brother for wanting to wear trousers to a family wedding."

TURKEY: Behind the EU window dressing

"TURKEY: Behind the EU window dressing
The people of Turkey, aided by a long history of organisation and resistance, fiercely resisted the US invasion of Iraq, successfully blocking many of their governments attempts to provide support to the invaders. Taylan Bilgic from the foreign news desk of Evrensel, the daily newspaper of the Turkish Party of Labour (EMEP), spoke to Green Left Weeklys Karen Fletcher at the Asia-Pacific Solidarity Conference in Sydney at Easter.
The Turkish Party of Labour was established in 1996, following a period from 1989 during which many thousands of workers engaged in mass resistance against the laws of the military junta. The peak of that resistance was the Zonguldak miners strike and march followed by a massive general strike in 1991. The workers leading that resistance started to talk about the need for an open and legal working-class party.
The party is similar to traditional communist parties for example it operates on Leninist democratic centralist principles but it also differs in many ways. It does not see itself as the vanguard of the working class, but as a mass party that is open to all workers and as a school in which workers learn to engage in politics. Workers with only a vague idea of Marxism or socialism can quickly become branch leaders in our party. "

BOOK REVIEW

TOM ADAIR

Istanbul
Orhan Pamuk
Faber & Faber, £16.99

‘MY IMAGINATION requires that I stay in the same city, on the same street, in the same house, gazing at the same view. Istanbul’s fate is my fate... it has made me who I am," writes Orhan Pamuk a few pages into his bracing memoir. Two hundred and eighty pages later he confesses his sense of detachment: "the idea rises up inside me that I’m worthless and belong nowhere". The tension induced by this self-revulsion, at odds with his need for creative stasis, is born out of guilt. In this richly laden survey of his life he describes his earliest guilty pleasure - an erotic experience at the precocious age of four. It is a portrait of the artist’s privileged childhood - born to rich parents, a younger son in competition with his brother for the affection of their mother. Passively loved by the rich, he had a playboy father to whom he dedicates this book. There are chapters recalling the painters and foreign writers (Flaubert, Gide, Nerval) who gave the city a travellers’ cachet, and the local writers who gave it resonance. "

Sir, Turkish Cypriots enthusiastically endorsed the Annan plan for a Cyprus settlement in the referendum held on April 24 last year. In consequence, the European Union and the UK government both pledged to end the isolation of Northern Cyprus, notwithstanding the Greek Cypriots' rejection of the United Nations plan in their parallel referendum.
With the first anniversary of the referendums due, it is shocking to note that not a single embargo has been lifted, despite these pledges. Contrary to the mandate given by EU ministers to the Commission to end their isolation, the Turkish Cypriots are still denied direct trade, travel and communications. In spite of the fact that on the 28th of September 2001 Pope John Paul II visited Edjmiadsin in order to participate at the celebrations of the so-called 301st anniversary of the foundation of the Armenian Gregorian Church, the history of this church has to be examined closely. The celebrators present this anniversary as the 'foundation of the first Christian Church on earth'. Everybody who deals with the history of Armenia and with the nistojcy of Christianity, knows that this is not true, Even pro Armenian historians are not sure about the year of foundation and tend between 286 and 314. The initiative comes on the eve of Sunday's 90th anniversary commemorations among Armenians of what they regard as the start of the massacre of up to 1.5m people.
The move is likely to exacerbate the bitter dispute between Turks and Armenians. Introduction

Similarities do not make two things same. However, if two things are so similar they can be grouped in the same category. Common rules would apply to all the things in the same category. Therefore, similarities and abstraction are extremely important not only from academic but also from legal point of view. Surely if the things had nothing in common, or similarities are very low, they are different. Different things do not fall within the same category and are subject to different treatment and rules."

'New pope [is] anti-Turk' said the liberal, pro-EU Sabah daily in its front page headline. Catholics chose an old Nazi, German Ratzinger as their new Pope. He is against Turkeys membership to EU for cultural and religious reasons,' Sabah said"

EU Greets Ratzinger's Election, Turkey Concerned

Stefania Bianchi

BRUSSELS, Apr 20 (IPS) - Europe has cautiously welcomed the election of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger as the new pope, but there are also concerns over his view of Turkey's bid to join the European Union.

Joy and jubilation were mixed with reactions of surprise and disappointment when the 78-year-old Cardinal Ratzinger, the dean of the College of Cardinals and defender of conservative orthodoxy for 24 years, was named Apr. 19 as Pope Jean Paul II's successor.

The new pope, who will be known as Benedict XVI, is reckoned as a tough- minded enforcer of the 'true faith' and is firmly opposed to birth control and the ordination of women.

By choosing German-born Cardinal Ratzinger, the Vatican's 115 cardinals opted for a strong Catholic conservative insider, but also a potentially controversial figure and an opponent of Turkey's European Union (EU) membership bid. "

Turkish-U.S. relations are at a low point. In Turkey, literally everyone feels resentful of America's Middle East policies, and Ankara is reaching out to U.S. foes Syria and Iran. An outgoing U.S. ambassador to Ankara may not be replaced immediately when the time comes in the summer, a sure sign of strained relations. Some U.S. officials have, in an unsubstantiated way, blamed Turkey's lack of cooperation in the initial phases of the Iraq war for the lasting Iraqi insurgency. Turkey is no longer considered a real partner when the U.S. makes its plans for the Middle East."

"Editorial: Two countries united in loss

April 20, 2005
AS the 90th anniversary of the landing of Australian Diggers at Anzac Cove approaches, our reflections on the meaning of that event always intense are bound to deepen.

There are many memorials to that disastrous campaign, not only at Gallipoli but in cities and towns across Australia, where the carved-out names of sons and husbands testify to a lost generation of Australian men. But of the memorials to their sacrifice few can be more precious than the special relationship it has engendered between Australians and the Turkish people. Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey, pledged that the 8000 Diggers who died at Anzac Cove would lie there not as foreign invaders, but as honoured comrades. The way that successive Turkish governments, and the people themselves, have made good on that promise by the respect they have shown our fallen Diggers and the welcome they have extended to generations of pilgrims is beyond praise."

Thirty years after Cyprus was torn in two, Chris Haslam crosses no mans land into the resort that time forgot

Heat rises like petrol fumes from no mans land, shimmering above the shell holes and giving the disturbing impression that a careless spark could set the whole place off. I scan the positions opposite through heavy binoculars, blinking away the sweat and searching for movement in the black summer heat.
Three hundred yards to my left, a UN observer smokes a cigarette on the roof of an abandoned factory. Dead ahead, behind the razor wire, a war-torn city sprawls northwards, deserted and crumbling, its elegant quarters and slapdash slums made equal by death. "

Tuesday, April 19, 2005
In recently making an issue out of Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer's controversial visit to Syria, which took place last week, the Bush administration seemed to hark back to the pre-1995 days when the United States was heavy-handed in its treatment of its old ally. Yet dealing with Turkey is 80 percent presentation. That is a rule the U.S. would do well to remember in the future.
The Syria visit itself was largely a nothing occasion. After all, the Turkish president's role is mainly ceremonial, as the quaint period attire of top hat and tails that officeholders don on key state occasions testifies. Sezer's main function in Damascus was to respect protocol: to return the visit made by his counterpart, Syrian President Bashar Assad, in January 2004."

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - When a leading Turkish novelist said earlier this year that 1 million Armenians were murdered in his country during World War I, he broke a deep taboo.
Three lawsuits were filed against Orhan Pamuk, accusing him of damaging the state. ``He shouldn't be allowed to breathe,'' roared one nationalist group. In Istanbul, a school collected his books from students to return to him. On a news Web site, the vote ran 4-1 against him.
Turkey's mass expulsion of Armenians during World War I - which Armenians say was part of a genocide that claimed 1.5 million lives - is a dark chapter rarely discussed in Turkey or taught in its schools. "

The so-called Armenian 'genocide' allegations are on the agenda again. Turkey has been slandered for 90 years through an unfair and partial propaganda.

I say unfair because the Armenians do not use of any legal channels they have but only try to pressure Turkey politically.

Unfortunately, Turkey ignored revealing the facts for many long years. Statements made from time to time were not satisfactory. For the first time, the government, the opposition and parliament, with one voice, are challenging these baseless allegations. There were similar attempts in the past; however, these were done by diplomats or scientists, solely on their own. "
