Guest post: Turkey’s peace dividend
Mar 29, 2013 9:46am by beyondbrics

By Naz Masraff of Eurasia Group

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s prime minister, has had a very good week. On March 21, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) announced a ceasefire; the next day, Israel apologized for an attack on a Turkish-led peace flotilla in 2010. The possibility of a solution to its Kurdish insurgency holds out the possibility of real benefits for Turkey through increased trade with Iraq, improved security and political calm. There is a less immediate payoff from the Israeli apology but it is a favorable signal, nonetheless, from a region where there has been little good news of late.

This year’s Nevruz celebration, an ancient welcoming of spring, may be remembered for its political significance in which a peace deal was struck between Turkish leaders and Kurdish rebels. But once the shoulder-shrugging, line-dancing, fire-jumping and ululating are over, the real bounty of the season will continue to be celebrated all over Turkey and in many Istanbul restaurants, from the chic to the shabby.

At the age of seven I was stuck with the dream of "being a doctor" because that was an acceptable occupation for women in Turkey, even though my true dream was to be an astronaut. When I finished Sheryl Sandberg's book, Lean In, I immediately felt that it should be translated and heard by girls and women of Turkey. As a Turkish-American woman and a professional working to address the issue of women empowerment in Turkey, I believe that Sandberg's book could be a medium to stir up some debate around women's roles in the Turkish society as it did in the United States.

Beyond The Doner: Finding 'Real' Turkish Food In Istanbul
Posted: 03/29/2013 8:07 am

Before going to Istanbul, I knew little about Turkish cuisine beyond doner kebabs and Turkish delight. Much like stereotypical "Australian food," these misconceptions were uninformed and simplistic, yet not exactly horrible (lamb on a spit? What's not to love?). Still, I figured my three-day trip to the heart of the Ottoman empire was a good opportunity to finally learn about authentic Turkish cuisine. That, and I watched Anthony Bourdain guzzle some kind of honey-drizzled cream thing on the Istanbul episode of "No Reservations" and decided I could no longer go on living without knowing such rapture.

Ocalan is still pulling the crowds

ABDULLAH OCALAN, the Kurdish rebel leader and sole inmate of a Turkish island prison since 1999, should by now “have become a perfect irrelevance, the living dead, a Kurdish Ariel Sharon. And yet he had not. His every delusional sally, every spasm of self-pity and promotion was greeted by his supporters as evidence for an ability to outsmart his jailers.” Thus wrote a puzzled Christopher de Bellaigue, a British author (and a former correspondent for this paper) in “Rebel Land”, a tale of eastern Turkey published in 2009.

Turkey and Armenia missed an historic opportunity to improve ties when Turkey refused to ratify the Protocols on the Establishment of Diplomatic and Bilateral Relations signed on October 10, 2009. Rather than rapprochement, Armenians are now fully mobilized to organize worldwide activities commemorating the one hundred year anniversary of the Armenian Genocide on April 24, 2015. Armenia would never sacrifice gaining greater global recognition of genocide for cross-border cooperation with Turks. However, trade can still play a helpful role reducing tensions and creating positive momentum in Turkish-Armenian relations.

Today, Turkey exports its TV series to up to 50 countries, their global popularity constantly increasing.

The rapid success of these 'soap operas' attributed to the progress of the Turkish film and television industry in addition to the social climate portrayed. “I believe we depict an image of women who are free, who have a say in their lives. The women they see in the series are in a much different position than the ones in [some other] countries,” says CNNTürk Program Coordinator Aslı Öymen.
