Turkey's Uncertain Future - Middle East Forum

"Turkey's Uncertain Future

by Michael Rubin
The American
April 30, 2008

The legal case against the AKP is an affirmation of democracy rather than an assault upon it. Democracy rests upon the rule of law and constitutionalism. Neither plurality support nor a majority in parliament should place any politician or party above the law.

The AKP deserves credit for the economic growth that has occurred under its stewardship and for supporting Turkey's accession into the European Union. There is no doubt that the AKP has revolutionized Turkish politics. In the 2002 election, it trounced the more established parties by out-campaigning them. The AKP has earned its reputation for serving its constituents."

Published Date: April 30, 2008
By Sahar Moussa

When I was around six years old, my father took us on a trip to Turkey. Even though I was young at that time, I can recollect the thrilling moments that I spent there. The clearest thing I remember is the road trip that we took from Lebanon to this mystic country. We toured almost every city that we stayed at. When I look back at Turkey, what struck me most was its exotic yet interesting mix of cultures: the blend of different elements from the Oguz Turkic, Anatolian, Ottoman (which was itself a continuat
ion of both Greco-Roman and Islamic cultures) and Western culture and traditions which started with the modernization of the Ottoman Empire."

The lives of Turkish women revolutionized on the silver screen - ISTANBUL

"The lives of Turkish women revolutionized on the silver screen

By Dorte on Tuesday, April 29 2008, 12:41 -
By Mireille THORNTON ÇOLAK, Istanbul

Amongst an impressive range of artistic direction, two documentary films at the last Istanbul Film Festival stood out for me. Juxtaposed, they complimented each other with a common theme of encountering and transcending stereotypes of Turkish women as veiled and submissive. So, reactions from the apparently more urbane and cosmopolitan audience, provoked on occasion by the potently counter-intuitive humor of the film’s subjects, were fascinating too."

Rick Steves | Tribune Media Services

The city of Mostar lies at a crossroads of cultures: just inland from the Adriatic coast, in the southern part of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Mostar -- where Orthodox Serbs, Catholic Croats, and Muslim Bosniaks had lived in seeming harmony before the war, then suffered horribly when its warring neighborhoods turned the city into a killing zone -- provided me with one of the richest experiences of my travel year. The vibrant humanity and the persistent reminders of the terrible war a decade and a half ago combine to make Mostar strangely exhausting."

Dutch historian Pieter Geyl famously wrote that history is “an argument without an end”. In Switzerland today, arguing about history can mean you might end up having to explain your historical views before a judge of law.

The magazine’s potential crime - publishing an article in October 2006 by British historian Norman Stone. The former Oxford Professor of Modern History had argued that he was not convinced that the massacres of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in 1915 constituted genocide; such an historical view is a crime in this neutral country."

Apparently so. According to this Newsweek article by Morton Abramowitz and Henri J. Barkey, Turkey’s chief prosecutor prepared an indictment of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) last month. It charges the nation’s ruling political party with violating the Consitutional principle of secularism and seeks to dissolve the party altogether. Abramowitz and Barkey argue that America should care about this, and not in a cutely condescending, isn’t-it-interestin’-how-them-politics-of-small-lil’- countries-work kinda way, but rather, in an oh-shit-this-could-be-bad-for- American-interests kinda way. The Armenians and Ottoman Military Policy, 1915 -- Erickson 15 (2): 141 -- War in History

"The Armenians and Ottoman Military Policy, 1915
Edward J. Erickson

Mainstream western scholarship maintains that the Armenian insurrection of 1915 was never an actual threat to the security of the Ottoman state in the First World War and that the relocation of the Armenians of eastern Anatolia was unnecessary. In truth, no study of the Armenian insurrection and its effect on Ottoman military policy has ever been conducted. This article examines the Ottoman army's lines of communications architecture and logistics posture in eastern Anatolia in 1915. Armenian threats to the logistics and security of the Ottoman armies in Caucasia and Palestine are overlaid on this system. Evolving and escalatory Ottoman military policies are then explained in terms of threat assessments and contemporary counter-insurgency strategy. The article seeks to inform the reader why the Ottomans reacted so vigorously and violently to the events of the spring of 1915."

Cyprus Solution: Chorus of Approval

"Cyprus Solution: Chorus of Approval

By Roderic Pratt in Nicosia
If music be the food of love, play on.

Should political resonance be rated as music, the latest harmony resonating either side of the thin green line has struck a chord reverberating as sweetly in Europe as our continent’s anthem, Beethoven’s Ninth.

The Cypriot version of the Ode to Joy should indeed match that musical ambition by being the last movement – one toward final reconciliation.

Local politics have etched a new path, along which politicians may stroll in conversational rather than confrontational mode. May they continue to read from the same score sheet."

Until a decade ago, Turkey’s interest in the Western hemisphere was focused almost exclusively on its relationship with the United States. Turkish imports from Mexico are worth $185 million, Panama $40 million, Argentina $221 million and Venezuela $62 million.
