The European Union condemned Monday the 'disproportionate' use of force by Turkish police to clamp down on a women's demonstration in Istanbul, casting a new cloud over Ankara's EU hopes. The expression of concern was all the more embarrassing coming as key EU officials visited Ankara for talks on Turkey's preparations for starting EU membership talks later this year. 'We were shocked by images of the police beating women and young people demonstrating in Istanbul,' said the EU, which is urging Turkey to press ahead with reforms ahead of the planned start of EU entry talks in October. "
