Connecting Turkish Women
Worldwide Citizen of the Day column by Miki Cumming

Sema Karaoglu of San Clemente founded the 'Daughters of Ataturk' to provide a network for professional Turkish women around the globe. The organization is named for Kemal Ataturk.

In 1999, Sema Karaoglu founded an organization called 'Daughters of Ataturk,' designed to bring together women of Turkish birth and/or descent who now live in the United States and other parts of the world. Turkey's history, though not very well known, is one of fascination. Sema's background is Turkish, but she was born on the island of Cyprus (south of Turkey) which, at the time was part of the British Empire. She had some schooling in Turkey, but not much - instead, she went to elementary school and college here in Southern California. She had an aunt who lived here, which was one of the reasons the family chose to move here."
