Iraqi Kurds demand wider autonomy in northern Iraq and retaining peshmerga forces for cooperation in the establishment of a government

A top Turkish official complained yesterday that Iraq's Turkmen community, who share close ethnic ties with Turks, was not sufficiently willing to participate in the country's first post-war elections. Iraqi Kurds, whose political aspirations have been viewed with suspicion by Turkey, insisted on wider autonomy in the north of Iraq and retaining their peshmerga forces for cooperation with other Iraqi parties in the search for a government."
