Turkey is facing a fundamentalist threat, a retired army general said on Thursday speaking to BBC 4 Radio.
Retired Brig. Gen. Haldun Solmazturk said that those who want to establish an Islamic order in Turkey see the military as an obstacle to their goal.
The retired general claimed that there are secretive Islamic groups trying to infiltrate the army's ranks. 'They see the army as the main obstacle to achieving their aim of an Islamic republic,' he said.
The radio station said that although Solmazturk retired from the military last year, he sees himself and his country as being involved in a daily battle with forces that are trying to destroy the division between mosque and Parliament, and ultimately make Turkey an Islamic state under Sharia Law."
