As both the attention of the government and the focus of the newspapers have turned to the Middle East, two important developments have taken place ahead of an anticipated 'hot autumn' in the Ankara-Brussels axis.

A European Parliament report on Turkey, penned by Dutch deputy Camiel Eurlings, came before the European Parliament's Committee of Foreign Affairs. The report, admittedly, had been known, written and reflected upon for some time. The second report ever written by the Dutch conservative MEP was found too critical, particularly on its approach to the Cyprus question. Particularly important is its wording that Turkey's failure to open up its airports and harbors to the Greek Cypriots will have major consequences, and suspension of negotiations is even possible.
