"Kofi Annan arrives in Turkey
ANKARA - UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan arrived in Ankara on Tuesday for talks with Turkish leaders focusing on the situation in Lebanon, the Anatolia news agency reported.
Annan, who is on a tour of the Middle East, arrived in the Turkish capital just as the country's parliament debated a government motion to contribute troops to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
The motion is expected to pass, despite vocal opposition in parliament and street protests against the deployment.
Annan will meet Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul on Wednesday.
He plans to give a news conference before leaving Ankara on Wednesday afternoon.
