"Turkey's Kurds face a historic choice

Since March 22, 2006 things have changed in Turkey. On March 21, thanks to the extraordinary measures taken by our security forces, there were no incidents on Nevroz day. Turks and Kurds celebrated the coming of the new spring, or, as it is termed in Persian, 'the coming of the new light/day.' The day after Nevroz marked the beginning of a calculated escalation of Kurdish violence throughout Turkey. Since then the Kurdistan Workers’ Party has stepped up violence in southeastern Turkey and has targeted our security forces as well as civilians throughout major cities in Turkey. In other words, Kurdish violence is back on the agenda. "
