On the eve of his very last year in the Cankaya Palace, President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, known as a trustworthy statesman and devoted supporter of the democratic, secular, and law-abiding state, is set to make a sea change in his normally reserved public stance.
Sezer was elected by Parliament on May 5, 2000 as Turkey's 10th president, and officially began his seven-year term on May 16, 2000. In the first six years of his presidency, Sezer neither sought the media spotlight nor brought together political party leaders for a round table meeting. Nor did he like to directly voice his opinion on critical issues. Although it was his constitutional right, he didn't need to chair Cabinet meetings either."
