ANKARA, Turkey - A human rights group on Friday praised a top Turkish mental health hospital for ending its much criticized practice of giving electric shock treatment without anesthesia, and urged the Turkish government to ban the practice nationwide.
The MDRI however, wrote to Turkey‘s Health Ministry, asking that a law be introduced to prevent abuses in other parts of the country, Layikel said.
The group also has urged the European Union — which Turkey hopes to join — to demand an end to the practice."
