Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan must be wondering about the strange thing that is public support. When he stood for elections this summer, Kurds in southeast Turkey came out in record numbers to vote for him based on his promise to bring peace to the troubled region.
Just a few months later, with Turkey gathering its troops at the border and making threatening noises about going into Iraq and taking the battle to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PPK) guerillas, he has to listen to words like ‘ethnic strife’ and ‘restricted political rights’."
