My worries over Turkey's European Union route were strengthened, rather than alleviated, after half a week spent in Paris. I was one of the participants of the traditional brainstorming sessions of the renowned Abant Platform that convened in the French capital for 2006's annual encounter and dialogue. The Abant Platform, since its inception in 1998, has become a most tolerant, vivid and fruitful occasion for an exchange of ideas and getting to know each other, especially the 'other.' The Paris gathering was no exception to its reputation, with a number of prestigious French opinion-makers and intellectuals taking part for the first time."
