"Challenging the stereotypes
By Alexia Saoulli
WHAT are the odds of a 47-year-old Turkish Cypriot woman being elected in next month's parliamentary elections?
If I were a betting woman I'd say next to none. Not only is she a woman and a Turkish Cypriot, but Nese Yasin is running with Michalis Papapetrou's United Democrats and everyone knows the UD are hardly flavour of the month among the 74 per cent who voted 'no' in the 2004 referendum.
Personally, I had no reason not to want to vote for her. I just didn't know much about this candidate. All I did know was that one of her poems ('Which Half?') was used as the lyrics in a song by Greek Cypriot composer Marios Tokas.
I was therefore was with curiosity that I picked up the phone and arranged a meeting with the first Turkish Cypriot candidate since 1963."
