Turkey’s Eastern Anatolian cities, which have for years been unable to develop due to the terror threat, now face the possible threat of war in Iran.
The threat of possible American military action against Tehran, which insists on not stepping back from its nuclear studies despite intense international pressure, is having a disastrous affect on Turkish cities along the Turkey-Iran border. Commercial activities between Iran and Van, Hakkari and Agri, have remarkably declined following rumors of a possible US military intervention. Officials from the chambers of commerce in Van, Hakkari and Agri and experts told Zaman that the region’s cities, which have long suffered the affects of terror and the Iraq war, had recently started to develop; however, a possible Iran war will end this development process."
