WHILE Cyprus is the home of numerous of rags-to-riches stories, tales of the kebabs-to-riches variety are considerably less common. But it was from the humble take-away doner and the pre-packed sandwich that Turkish Cypriot Ali Ozmen Safa began building a fortune that has made him arguably one of the biggest names in north Cyprus.
So influential has he become that last April, Abdullah Gul – now President of Turkey, but then Foreign Minister – turned up at the launch of Safa’s Star Kibris newspaper in Kyrenia and revealed to all that the first time he had ever traveled in a Rolls Royce it had been in London, and it had been in one of Safa’s."
