Let's not fool ourselves. The long-waited Rome conference on the Middle East would have been doomed to failure if there had been expectations that it would declare an immediate and unconditional cease-fire in Lebanon. If you are unable to read into what Condoleezza Rice had been saying since the eruption of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, you would have had empty expectations for a cease-fire and then assume that the Rome conference was a disappointment."
