IC Publications-Turkish Cypriots chip away at isolation with direct flight

"Turkish Cypriots chip away at isolation with direct flight

An airliner operated by the breakaway Turkish state in northern Cyprus was set to leave for Azerbaijan on the first direct flight out of the isolated statelet to a country other than Turkey, an official said Sunday.

The flight operated by Turkish Cypriot Airlines comes a month after an Azerbaijani plane landed in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on the first direct commercial flight to the self-proclaimed state in three decades avoiding Turkey.

'The flight to Baku will be an important step towards breaking the economic isolation and embargos imposed on the TRNC,' Kudret Akay, an adviser to the Turkish Cypriot foreign ministry, said."
