On our voyage around the Black Sea, we seemed to journey through time as well as space as different places hinted at past centuries and civilisations. We caught glimpses of the Ottoman Empire; of Stalin's Russia; of the Crimea at the time of the Charge of the Light Brigade; of Odessa's vibrant, musical heritage; and of the deliciously decadent world of Queen Marie of Romania. Only the sea could feasibly link these colourful, wonderfully evocative locations, bypassing the daunting frontier-post friction of an overland trip. "
