"Best chance for a solution since 1974

A NEW peace process in Cyprus offers the best opportunity since the Turkish invasion to solve the division of the island, according to the latest report from the International Crisis Group (ICG), a Brussels-based think tank.
The report attributes the “window of opportunity” to the election of President Demetris Christofias, who together with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, have demonstrated the political will to make current talks succeed. Both leaders are characterised in the report as “pro-settlement” while Christofias was singled out for his efforts to “reverse the previous government’s hardline rejection of compromise”."
