After meeting with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish officials indicated Ankara may be ready to change its position regarding its refusal to recognize the patriarch as having ecumenical or universal status. ‘We will need to see the issue differently and rethink it,’ said Foreign Minister Ali Babacan. Many Turks fear a Christian church with universal status could carve out a Vatican-like state in Istanbul."
