"Turkish Cypriots: EU shouldn't introduce new conditions on direct trade

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) welcomed on Tuesday the European Union's move to speed up work for direct trade with Northern Cyprus but also stressed that there shouldn't be any new conditions on its realization.

Turkish Cypriot Foreign Minister Turgay Avci came out against efforts by the Greek Cypriot administration to include the return of Varosha as part of the direct trade deal and said this is an issue that should be discussed under comprehensive negotiations. 'Otherwise, it would not be coherent with expectations of Turkish Cypriots or commitments of the European Union.' Avci also warned that linking direct trade with Varosha issue would harm the efforts for reaching a lasting settlement. "
